Upgraded to AMD Phenom II from Athlon II and now I can't install the new heatsink...

Just guessing here, did a little research using google and I found where they actually use intel heatsinks even on amd processors. Does anybody think that a screw-in 775 heatsink would work? I'm thinking it might.

I looks like the Intel mounts on my Dell Optiplex's.

As long as it fits I don't see why not.

Kadan,

Measure the distance between the holes and let us know. I have to find one of my extra heatsinks and measure it.

Edit - Looks like they are roughly 2 7/8" apart.

Now the question is, what does he do? Find one that just screws in, or replace the back mounting bracket with the new heatsink?

now back to this screw in heatsink, yes you were right about the 2 7/8" now what?

Are you savvy enough to remove the motherboard from the case to put in a different backplate? If not, you'll have to take it in to computer repair shop and have them put in a good aftermarket heatsink. Or you'll have to find a better screw-in type heatsink.

I mean I have never done it before but I'm up for the challenge, just need some advice on how to do it bc I have no idea. And are u guys sure this will work before I go thru all this? And where do I get a different back plate?

And u don't think there's a good enough screw in out there?

The back plate will come with whatever aftermarket heatsink you get if its a good one. Otherwise you'll have to find one that just screws in to the existing holes, something like one of these.

Do you have a 3pin or 4pin connection on the motherboard for the cpu cooler?

However, at idle, the 965 should be around 42 degrees C if thermal compound was placed correctly. Is there dust in the cooling fan? That will drastically reduce cooling efficiency.
