Ok Im sure you get this all the time and are maybe getting tired of newb but hey I gotta start somwhere. So I have a older desktop computer that I use for some random reports for my business, as well as surfing the internet, and I do some downloading..but no gaming or video editing or anything like that.

Anyways I want to upgrade slowly and am very interested in doing it myself. I would like some help please. Here is what I currently have....

I can print a report from AIDA 64 if thats helpful to anyone..

I bought a cheap case elite 310 for $10 after rebate..

Hp Pavilion p6510y http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...egory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4223474#N194

So basically its a Amd quad core processor 2.8ghz

I have done some minor stuff....mostly best buy purchases, dont laugh

I have moved my operating system to a intel 180 gb ssd 520 series
I also purchased a 120 gb ssd same series
I still have the 750 gb that came with my system, which I am using for files and what not.
2tb external hdds usb 3.0 (toshiba and segate, portable ones)
and a 1tb seagate external (2.0 usb) its a older one from walmart a few years back.
I dont really have anything but movies on one and some music and backups on the others. To much I know, I got a good deal..

I have upgraded some of the ram, I installed 2 x 4gb and kept the other 2 slots with the factory 2 x 2..so I have 12 gb total...

I have a cheap video card (I bought a more expensive one to see if it made a difference for me, but I took it back, I didnt see much differece)

The card is a Radeon 6670....

I also put in a pci usb 3.0 card....

I want to know what I should try and sell or get rid of or what I should try and buy...or do I need anything? Will I be impressed by upgrading?

I was wanting faster SATA speed I guess..I just want to build something and learn really.. Please help

If you've added hardware like hard drives, graphics etc, you need a new PSU pronto. Not a sexy option but more than likely required since that HP PC has a 250W psu.

Please post your exact model PSU.

Yeah, even if you didn't buy anything, I would get a new PSU. But now that you have added stuff, you need a new PSU NOW. I would get the Corsair HX 520, very nice PSU. But, if you are on a lower budget, a CX 600 is nice. I heard the CX 420s and 500s whine, but I don't think the 600w does.

I've heard that for the whole CX lines but I think the later revisions that they sell know no longer have that problem. I have an "older" (circa 2011) CX 600 and it is a great PSU except for it's lack of modular-ness. Whisper silent and no whine.

+1 to a new PSU as well. CX 500 would be a good choice. This is pretty much required at this point.

Your motherboard tops out at the Phenom II chip which are still a few years old. They're actually still great performers in most applications and should be a "decent" increase in performance. The main thing if you're wanting to speed up just basic computing would be clear off your computer of all the useless junk you don't need. Do a thorough virus scan with at least one (preferably) more scanners such as Avast, MalwareBytes, MSE, etc. Running CCleaner will help a lot too I think. Download link below. You can also remove any programs you don't use. If you really wanted to boost your performance then you would need to get a new motherboard and CPU (you could recycle most everything else).

Somelooking into it, I think that only the CX 430 whines, and they don't even sell it anymore on newegg.so go with a CX 500, CX 600, or HX 520.

I've read reviews on all products in the CX line and they have the whine in some cases, it's not localized to one of them.

The two CX 430s I've used don't whine. Both of my parent's systems have them and they're fine. I wouldn't not buy a CX 430 or any other CX PSU just because *some* *may* whine. Corsair are meant to have very good RMA service anyway so if you did get unlucky and get a whining unit they'd probably replace it for you anyway.

I believe Corsair recently bought out new CX power supplies anyway.

If i had any PSU that whined id RMA it. Corsair would take it back. The 450W 32A on 12V rail PSUs. Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling...

So I forgot to list the PSU, I upgraded that as well, as there is no good computer parts store in my area, I purchased at best buy. It is a thermaltake 430watt http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Thermal...pply/9827301.p?id=1218179698427&skuId=9827301 . It seems to work out ok, It was what was available at the time. Is that adequate?

Its adequate.
Might be able to oc the cpu a little. Depends on if the bios will allow it, and the board has limits.
If you can reinstall the os(to save $), could get a new board and still run the 630. That would free you from HP :), plus remove those limits and give you future upgradability.

See * in memory specs. If the 2x4 you bought is 1333 or higher, looks like you can remove the 2x2's, put the 2x4 in those slots and run 8GB at faster speed, and 8 is plenty. With the use you describe 12gb wouldn't be any faster and could be slower.

Ok. So reinstall my operating system? Actually I just did a clean install on my 180 gb ssd and got rid of the 120gb ssd. I purchased a 3tb Seagate 7200 RPm Internal HDD today. I guess Ill try and sell one of the external 3.0USB HDD since I really dont need close to that much space.

Maybe my thread needs to be moved? Any help, suggestions?

I need to update my bios for sure, but when I go to hp it does not give windows 8 option. Only Windows 7. Can I use that option?

Also I want to upgrade my Cpu and Motherboard.

I was going to by the corsair gs700 tonght at best buy but the salesperson talked me out of it saying that my 430 is all I need. What can I buy that I will be impressed with? Or what do I need to get to lay the ground work for the next thing?

Also want to say thank you for your responses so far. I need to get this forum setup so it emails me when i get a response.

You'll need to clean install 8 again after the new board because of hardware change. After that you'll be able to update bios as needed from manufacturer, instead of what HP may or may not allow.

No need for 700w or even a new ps at this point, since you aren't running a gpu for gaming.

How much do you want to spend on cpu/mb?

BB isn't really a good place to buy from.

Thanks for the quick reply...I am not planning on buying my Mobo and Processor from best buy..well actually they dont have any in store around here or I probably would have already just because. As far as price range goes I was thinking mid to mid/high..I dont need to be the fastest or newest..Like my desktop is over two years old and I still enjoy it everyday, it does everything I need it to do, but thats only because this is the fastest computer I have ever owned. So Im sure the next setup will impress me as well. Are the combos a good deal? Is 300 to 400 a decent range? To little? Where does the bang for the buck begin to decrease? Is used a good option?

Here is a little info on my current system, I plan on using the ram and hds for the new one.
