System Restore Error

Performed a system restore and received the following error message
"System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x0000022)"
I tried restoring to an earlier point and still get this message. Also now my Ralink Lan Card is showing disconnected but the device property window shows that it is working properly.

I am running Win7 64.

Any ideas?

System restore isn't very reliable for that reason there. Since this is a wireless issue, go into the network and sharing center and click on the left hand side where it says manage wireless networks and delete your existing connection and reset it back up.

Opened up network and sharing center and have only three choices in left margin; Control Panel Home, Change adapter settings, and Change advanced sharing settings. Could not find anything about manage wireless networks. However I know the network works because I'm using another computer to post this message.

I'm sorry, I thought it was a wireless card. See now that you said lan card. Was there any windows updates installed that may have caused it? Go into device manager and see if you can roll back the driver. Or is it possible the cable is not tight in the port?

Rolled back the driver and also checked the connections and still no improvement. What I don't understand is that Device Manager (in the General Tab) says the device is working properly. Also there is no yellow sign next to its name. Yet, the icon on my toolbar says it is disconnected.
??

It's possible the port is dead. Have you tried using a different ethernet cable?

Wait a minute, I just saw your other thread. So this is a wireless card? But yet you don't have manage wireless network on the left hand side in network and sharing center?

John, I'm sorry. It is a Ralink RT61 Wireless Lan Card. When I look at it through Device Manager, there is no yellow sign (there is on the Teredo TUnneling Adapter that is above it). And when I double click on the Ralink and open up its properties windows, it says the device is working properly. Yet there is a big red X through the Ralink symbol on my tool bar as well as a red X through connection symbol that states "Not connected - no connections are available".
Oke - troubleshoot option does not appear when I right click on it.

I've also tried uninstalling and then installing with latest driver and still no change. Is it possible that this could be some type of virus or malware?

Just tried that and still no improvement with the network connection. Also when I open up Device Manager and look under Network adapters, tunneling does not even show up (maybe that's supposed to happen?)

At this stage id recommend two things:

Open Command Prompt (as admin)

Type:

sfc /scannow

let it scan and finish

Then type:

ipconfig /flushdns

Then restart

Then reinstall your chipset drivers, from intel or amd.

OK, before I was going to try your fix, I had another wireless card (the exact same), on another computer. I traded it out and now I can't boot the computer. There is a message that comes up that says AHCI BIOS not installed!! CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded. What the heck did I do?

Sounds like your cmos battery may be dead. Its the little round silver battery on your motherboard. How old is this system? You will need to enable AHCI if you had it set up previously.

I built this machine with the help of everyone on this site, back in 2009. I thought I changed the battery a couple of years ago, but I can do it again. What will I need to do after I put a new battery in?

You will get the same message. You have to setup the bios. Change date and time. And then enable AHCI if thats how you set it up before.

OK, got it back up and running. Now I'm back to the beginning with my wireless card. Should I go ahead and try what Okey is recommending? Considering this is a new card, I've got to believe it's something other than the card.

So explain where you are at right now. You have a wireless card. Did you install a third party program to control the wireless? Usually if that happens, you have to use that utility to setup the wireless connection. Open network and sharing center and click on connect to network. Do you see any wireless networks listed?

Okey - it worked!! Thank you very much. I guess I should have tried your fix before I swapped out the cards. But I was a little nervous because I didn't know what to expect. Now that we know this fixed it, any idea what happened?

Thanks again
