Monitor as Extended Desktop?

Greetings all,

I found a computer that I didn't know I had........hummnn.......It has an ASUS motherboard, win 7, 32bit, as an OS............There is on-board video (PCI type port) which works fine utilizing the typical port (PCI?) from the motherboard.

1).....I want to know if I can ADD another video card (PCI?) to an empty slot , and connect another monitor to use an extended destop......

2)......I want to know if I can ADD another video card (digital type(?) (don't know the actuall name), and connect another monitor to use an extended destop......

3)....My intent is to have one monitor as a 'main" and the second monitor as an extended desktop...Is this possible?

....Thanks for any assistance....

Which board? At a certain point boards started doing active/active with the igpu and an adapter card so you can do what you described by straddling the integrated solution with the add-in card on multiple displays.

Might just be worth checking out a dual HDMI video card or something, it appears the G41 has a chipset limitation for doing dual displays using the integrated. Also that does seem to have a PCI Express slot, so your options are significantly better than classic PCI. For reference I'm posting this from using a $1 7750 with dual monitors.

A 2gb gt710 should suffice, Basically any card that offers VGA, DVI, HDMI ports. Most will come with 1 port each.

that is the minimum that I will need?......This would be an agp card then?

EDIT - Looking at some of the boards on flea-bay, the "ends" appearto be different...I have dell monitors here. (see attached picts - same plug end but, one is lightened up for easier viewing)

To run the second monitor you'll need a converter either from hdmi to DVI or VGA to DVI. You'll be spending a lot more money on a card that has 2 DVI ports.

What I have in a few other computers is a agp(or is that pci?...VERY coonfused at the names and types!) card that has the 2 ports - one being an agp and I have connected a dell monitor (vga?) to one port and from the other monitor the dvi(??) port...That has enabled me to do duals as an extwended desktop...

PCI slots are white, AGP slots are usually brown, PCI express slots can be any color. Here is an image of what each slot and card looks like.

If you can find a card with DVI and HDMI outputs it would be better. You would need an adapter such as this to go from HDMI port on card to dvi cable.

OK, so if you buy a video card with without 2 dvi outputs, how are you gonna connect the second monitor with a dvi cable? As long as one of the monitors has a different connection and you have the cable for it, then you are fine. So one monitor will use DVI and the other will use VGA.

I just dug up out of the closet a VT2400PRO AGP 512MB V/D/T CARD with the ports I require....I just applied the cord to it and it fits....NOW, to see if I can fit it into the computer......(now where's that hammer?)......picts attached.

**EDIT---JUST TRIED IT FOR FITMENT - CARD EDGE WILL NOT FIT INTO AGP SLOT...APPEARS TOO LONG......@$^((&t^* !

It's an AGP card so it should fit into an AGP slot.
But looking at the manual for the motherboard you listed, there are no AGP slots on that motherboard. You need a PCI Express video card.

Have taken pictures of the motherboard to establish the board and maker/model.........Those are the numbers I extracted from the board......The case seems to be generic.......
