Any Good Tragic Computer Stories?

I would Like to hear some good stories(happy ending or not)!

I had a friend visiting me and he is a writer. His laptop is his life but his laptop was slowing down due to some spy and adware. He asked me fix this problem and I ran Ad-Aware on his laptop but the program altered his profile file in XP and I could not get his computer boot up...All this mans lives work is on this computer with no back up and he is leaving in a few days.

Since, i couldn't fix this problem I worked my way into MS DOS and copied manually all his files from the harddrive onto his digital camera and transferred them onto my computer. This step took all weekend! Then I formatted his hard drive and for some strange reason he had his originally XP disc with him but he threw away the product key. So, I had to call microsoft and pay $10 for a new one...

The only down side was that I couldn't copy any file that had a "space" in the name. So the moral of the story is use the_underscore_in_all_your_files_with_more_than_one_word!

Let me hear yours...problem and solution.

That's where a bootable linux distro comes in handy!
 
No I think the moral of the story is.. Know what you are doing.. ;)

So how does a tragic story have a happy ending? Would it be like.. "Yeah Mr. Hawkins died.. but I lived happily ever after"
 
I used to work for that shitty company that every one loves "The Computer Shop". Left there a couple of years ago but I am still really good friends with my old boss from the place.

Anyone in this country will know that they Famously went bust about a year ago, closed down all stores and let all the staff go. Pretty gutting for my mate as him and his wife were expecting their first child....not a good time to lose your job.

Well he and a couple of other managers were kept on for an extra month and given the task of touring round various closed down shops in the country to collect the point of sale items....basically branded advertising stuff.

They were given a van and were told that every store they were going to had been emptied of all stock.

Upon arriving at the first shop they found that the complete systems had been removed but loads of other stuff remained...barebone systems, lcd monitors, various hardware parts such as GPU's, memory, optical drives, hard drives.....a veritable aladdins cave for your average pc person.

So they checked again with head office to confirm all stock had been removed and nothing of any value was left within the stores.....all confirmed.

Well you can imagine what came next, a month of the three of them touring shops picking up anything they could get their hands on. By they time they had finished my mate had literally boxes full of computer components.

So much so that I picked up a centrino laptop and a damn nice computer system complete with 15"lcd monitor and Epson R200 printer all for the bargain price of £150 :D

The reast was sold on ebay or to various other people and for the time during which he was unemployed he was able to support his expectant family and treat a few friends in the meantime :)



For anyone cosidering this as a bit fraudulent please understand the situation. Those who know of the collapse of "the computer shop" and Time computers will know just how ugly it was and how out of order the owners were, no warning, no pay off, and talk of no final wage. The owners however are still trading using the time name and are known to have got away with a stupid amount of money so personally I think it was all fair in the end ;)

A friend of mine had already fried one GPU due to OC'ing. After that, he bought himself a nice Radeon 8500, which was very good at the time he bought it.

One day, while he was surfing the net, he started to smell something funny. Like something was burning, he looked at his computer and noticed the videocard was smoking. Luckily he had the side of the case open so he had quick access to it, and managed to stop it from burning up completely.

Later on he found out that the fan's ball bearing had screwed up and stopped the fan from spinning completely. This was his second fried GPU. Fortunately, he still had 3 months to go in the warranty. Although he had OC'ed it, they replaced it.

So he lived happily ever after with his "new" Radeon 8500... until the day came and he ditched the thing for a new sexy X800XT. :P

Would a video card actully need a fan to keep going when only surfing the net? I know alot don't, but I dont know about that card exactly.

One time I didn't have my ram in all the way and the mobo started smoking. I thought for sure it was fried. I almost started to cry, but luckly it started back up and has been working fine ever since. Not really tragic, but it made my heart sink...
 
What I would. lol No seriosly though do any of you sometimes drool at a computer part? just wondering........... I don't................
 
i drooled when i first saw the 7800gt in action (rememver this was when they where top of the line plus i had never even seen a computer without the integrated gpu.)

yeh, exactly, it wont cool itself down, theres ntohign to disperse the hat, it could overheat even if you had it idleing on the desktop.
 
today i couldnt boot into windows. it would go past the windows xp screen and give me a bsod. i amlost put my fists thru the screen because i am fed up with this pile of crap hp calls a pc.
 
that would hurt man lol, i put my hand threw a window last Sun., not this Sun., 1 before, and had 2 get 5 stiches, hurt real bad.
 
lol i would just threw the screen on the floor and stomped on it. you dont want to be around me when i am mad. i threw a ratchet strap at my neighbors because they wouldnt stop asking me if i want lemonade. it was the metal part to
