Need info on max processor

greetings,
i thought i had posted this someplace but, i can't remember where!...i have a dell b110 computer with a 2.5 processor...someone told me that the max that my motherboard will accomodate is a 3.0ghz processor...

.......so, with that in mind, could someone tell me a little bit about what max processor i would need (celeron, amd, intell, sempron, etc)?..what "socket" it is?.......

.......my goal is to purchase another processor and rip out all the damn duct- work the current setup has inside, and get a "normal" fan and heatsink setup which is the next question i have....would i ask a "vendor/seller" that i would need a fan and heatsink for a socket "xxx" ?......thanks again!

That computer contains a Celeron D processor. It is socket LGA 775. According to what im reading, you pry couldnt get a much faster processor for it. As i dont think that chipset supports the Core 2 Duo which would really be the only step up for that socket.

Would be cheaper to get a new cooler for your current cpu and just OC it to 3.0ghz as im sure it could reach that no problem. However it pry wouldnt increase performance a whole lot.

The Celeron D is already dual core. To be honest im not sure you could get a faster processor on that motherboard.
 
If it's an LGA775 socket then his motherboard will take Cure 2 Duo's, those are much faster than any Celeron D.

You said you weren't looking for a Dual Core, You allready have one.
 
I don't think boards have a limiter on how fast the CPU can go, they can have a certain amount of RAM but I don't think they limit the CPU speed.

If you want it to run faster you can overclock it.

thanks for the reply. however, i think you are wrong. according to some research another member did, he indicates that dell said that the max speed that board will accept is "xyz". i also know that there are also limitations on the about of ram a system will take. i was also advised that the dell computers' bios or cmos (?) (or at least mine) is "locked" which will not allow for overclocking.
 
Almost all Dells-gateways-emachines and so on have the bios overclocking disabled or doesnt have any settings to change! They dont want you to upgrade, they want you to buy a new computer!

Motherboards as far as I know, don't limit the speed of the CPU that they can take, aslong as it's the same socket, if you can show me some evidence that says otherwise?

What do you mean, The BIOS is locked, you don't know the password to get into it?

...well, my choice of vocabulary is probably incorrect. however, i was told that the motherboard that comes inside my dell b110 desktop (which currently has a +/-2.5ghz celeron processor) will only accept a +/- 3.2ghz celeron or a 2.8ghz+/- intel(?) processor. if i were to exceed this, i would have problems so-to-speak. as far as the bios (i believe that is what it is) goes, i have any and all "passwords" and i am not locked out or anything like that. i was told that the bios(?) did not have "provisions" that were "excessible" to allow an over-clocking of processors on that board. dell has never gotten back to me on $hiT on any issue and that is why i will never purchase from them again and will disuade others from purchasing.

Just because his board is Slot 775 DOES NOT mean it will support all 775 processors. He would have to contact Dell to find out what processors the motherboard supports. If the board is more than a year old then most likely it only supports up to Pentium D and that could be iffy....

a member here a while back was able to get hold of dell and the info i have provided you is, in effect, what i was told by the member whom was in turn, told by dell. the computer will be a year old this May.
 
Ok, basically speaking, the BIOS is locked by the manufacturer. They do this to stop people OCing there machines so they can make more money. Also, to answer eberyones questions about what processor you should put in, for starters all pentium D's had a 800 mhz fsb, while his mobo has a 533 fsb, so any pentium D's/p4's/c2d's willl all struggle to run. Also the Chipset can't support those processors. If your going to upgrade you'll have to buy a higher speed celeron. Good luck.

...so, i am still back to where i am however, thanks for clearing that up. so, my search continues for a 3.2 celeron and a way to mount the sink and fan...

not necessisarily in his cas this would apply, but i overclocked my sega genesis, only alittle and it freaked.his computer wont overclock by that much, andd it is defintly higher quality, but cant you have problems overclocking? otherwise wouldnt sompanys build computers with the modifcations you ake to overclock it? i dont know much about it so i am most likely thinking wrongly, please enlighten me
