I use a laptop from the gov (my job) and i can bring it home and us it on my own internet. So you know... i still want to use my comp for personal business... Is it possible that I coulnd't erase everything evan with Ccleaner? Is it possible that a background program records my online activities? Let me know what you think...

Yes there are things that CCleaner won't catch, and as for background programs I would think that they are installed. But if the computer is for work then just use it for that.

Make sure to select overwrite on the laptop, of at least 3 with Ccleaner, much more secure.

No you can't. Computer Forensics; they can catch anything and everything you did on there if they wanted. Even after you format; but that's if you can format a gov. computer.

what about using a company's hard drive utility, like western digitals to write zeros to the entire drive? then you could format, how can they still get previous info off of it?

Maybe you cannot delete it completely but if overwritten enough you can make it not worth there while. In other words very difficult and expensive.

wow you think they would spend a lot of money trying to find out you've been to computerforum.com. I mean if you are selling stolen wepons on ebay, then think of a professional eraser or your own laptop.

more than likely unless you're sharing government secrets, they're not going to bother you

i'm sure your employer has better things to do than bust you for looking at pornz, and pirated movies and music aren't exactly the government's prerogative either

i'm sure they're more concerned with what you're doing on your computer while you're AT WORK, and they can monitor your internet useage remotely while you're there, through the server, so they don't have any reason to inspect your computer

yes you can completely delete the things you do or put on your computer. Yes even government computers. google around. there are overwritting programs that can randomly scramble the 1's and 0's (binary code) in your drive, and if randomly scrambled 27 times or more its mathematically impossible for the gov to unscramble your mess and if your not the president or dont have reason to have top secret stuff on your computer anyways they would never take the effor to try.

I don't think he want to format it... I just think that he wants to use it at home without them knowing what he is using it for. In that case, it would be very hard to do.

ADE has the best idea... get an external hard drive and use it for home use. Also, in newer laptops, you can swap out the hard drive very easily, so maybe you would want to get a 40GB 2.5" hard drive for $50 for home use.

All you would do would be to wipe out the information on that small area of the disk. If it was something big and they really wanted to, most of the information could still be retrieved. The only sure way to wipe all the information is dipping the disks in an acid bath or burning both sides of them with a blow torch.

I don't know how, but encrypt the drive. How do you do that anyway? How do you set passwords on folders?

I got busted at school today for putting Age of Empires 2 on the volume(apps and edu. tools) drive, I was wanting to put it on another PC. If this was a bug in the network or an identity threat, they wouldn't find crap. The IT guy is a good friend, too, That p's me off. I really don't care, I don't worship the P4 1.7Ghz School PC's anyway.

jeez what are u navy? they wont give a crap. look. my father was caught using one of his squadrons laptops, they dont care. as long as you keep it together in good working order, you will be fine, i swear it on my life. as long as u work there, you are entitled to use it however you see fit, as long as nothing you are doing is illegal, explicit or 'morally biased'. that is what the letter to my father said...

no worries dude :)

One of the better ones is simply called eraser. It works on the DOS level and the full version will overwrite a HDD or flash drive with as many passes as you want. I'd also recommend buying a USB flash drive and if you want to download stuff at work or school or whatever use firefox and set it up to download directly to the flash drive.
