Building a Desktop

I got the news today that my laptops motherboard is fried. Done. And I've had enough with this laptop anyway.

So...I'll be building a desktop. Now. I'll be using it for games like America's Army and Sims 2.

Here's the deal.

Go to Here

Scroll Down --> American Buyers --> Play Machines --> $600 Budget

I'm really liking that, for a small budget.

And it will play America's Army and Sims 2, I take it?

Maybe take one of the 256MB X800 Graphics Cards

AA 2.8
Sims 2

So, what do you think of that?

I'd also like Dual Core, is there a way I can upgrade that, w/o the budget going up EXTERMELY high?

Thanks

EDIT: Here's what I've formed.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor (DUAL CORE!! :)) $109.00+Free Shipping
DFI C51PV-M2/G Infinity Micro ATX AMD Motherboard $93.99+$6.13 Shipping
Spire SilverFin III Sp-7688B Silver Computer Case $23.99+$15.99 Shipping
CD/DVD Burner w/ LightScribe $31.99+Free Shipping
Western Digital Caviar 160GB Hard Drive $50.99+$5.94 Shipping
Kingston 1GB (2 x 512MB) 533 DDR2 SDRAM $122.49+$4.99 Shipping
XCLIO GOODPOWER 500W PSU $51.99+$7.64
Sapphire Radeon 9600PRO $56.99+$4.99

That's it :)

It came out to 541.43+the shipping costs, so it should be around $600. I can sell the video card that comes with the motherboard and I can sell the refurbished laptop.

How's it sound? Is everything compatible?

Thanks

The only things that need to be changed are the mobo and ram since the mobo listed on that thread isn't longer available, and anyway doing this also allow you to upgrade your system later.

First thing's compatibility - that 9600 is an AGP card, whereas the motherboard is PCI-E only. You'd be well advised to switch the video card to a PCI-E model. The 9600 is very outdated anyway.

I also feel that the board is a little light on features for the price.

Given that you're looking at a budget focused build, I wouldn't be spending so much on RAM. Something like this Corsair XMS2 1GB Kit is better value. Put the extra money into upgrading the video card to at least a 7600GS/GT. That will provide far better performance overall.

I can sell the video card that comes with the motherboard
I'm afraid not. That's integrated video, built into the motherboard and cannot be removed.

he put together an amd x2 not intel but the i clicked the link and the motherboard is in stock so it obviously is still available but id advise in getting a dif mobo, such as

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131014

this for ram

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231099

and something like this stay in ur budget but if u still have a lil room get the 7600

For RAM, I will choose A-DATA 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model ADQVE1908K - Retail $74.99 after rebate

GPU: EVGA 256-P2-N541-T2 GeForce 7600GS 256MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail Buy before 31/03. $69.99 after rebate

Need a SATA HDD instead:
Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

MB :Foxconn MCP61VM2MA-RS2H Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail since do not have much budget.
I have heard Foxconn's factory producing some of the intel MB. Don't know if it is true.

What pieces should I use? Somebody, could they put together some of the pieces I have but substitute the ones they recommend?

Nvidia Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)
GeForce2
GeForce3, 3 Ti
GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
GeForce 6600, 6800

? Where's the 7600. Is it better than GeForce2?

Addign up all the components that I saved under favorites (and overwritten, from suggestions), it came out to $541 including Shipping, which is pretty darn cheap for the quality of machine I will be building.

So, I took all 4 suggestions aboved and replaced them.

So, how does that sound (see poster above for other components)

First, you will need a GPU with PCI-E x 16.
Then expensive one is better :) But you can have a look here.
You can see the comparision.

By the way, if you still have some money, Geforce 7600GT do a better job.

the mobo wont fit in that case and, you cold get a way cheaper PSU

hmm so case size really is important? i was building a computer using a very small board and a small case and i thought as long as its a certain size it should fit, with a desktop though i figured anything ould be big enough. not the case?
