Right ladies and gents, ive narrowed my search down to two laptops. Im going to buy one of them within the next day. One is a macbook, the other is a sony vaio VGNSZ4MN/B.CEK. I want a laptop because i realise i use a computer everyday of my life and its a very important component in my productivity and lifestyle. My music, movies and photos are all stored on a computer and i want to be able to make that all portible and just free. Plus i want something ultra cool that will make my friends green eyed. I really want something that i will look at and be happy ive spent an insane amount of money on. Here are the contenders, oh and forget about the difference in price, its completely irrelevant as im willing to pay either.

Macbook £1014: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=32B42242&nclm=MacBook

The macbook is extremely stylish and its a fashion accessory which is what i want, it doesnt have a decent graphics card but im not tempted to play games as i have a 360. Also i dont have a clue whether i want to venture into the world of mac and its operating system, this laptop will be a huge part of my life as i will most likely do everything on it so i want to make sure i choose the best for portibility and performance.

2GB 667 DDR2 - 2x1GB SO-DIMMs
80GB Serial ATA drive (5400rpm)
Keyboard (English) & Mac OS (English)
Country kit
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4MB L2 cache
6x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory4
Power Adapter
Battery

Sony £1300: http://shop.sonystyle-europe.com/So...l=www.sonystyle.co.uk&redirected=true&drc=def

The sony looks great, its thin and portable but its also got a decent graphics card which is an advantage over the macbook if i ever want to play Counter strike source again. Its windows vista which i have never used before and its not a fashion accessory like the mac, its just a laptop and it wont get any more attention than that which is a downside.

Intel® Centrino® Duo mobile technology with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5600 (2 MB L2 cache, 1.83 GHz and 667 MHz FSB) and Intel® PRO/Wireless 802.11a/b/g
Genuine Windows Vista™ Business (English version)
100 GB (Serial ATA, 5400 rpm) hard disk drive
2 GB DDR2-533 SDRAM (2 x 1 GB), maximum 2 GB DDR2-533 SDRAM
13.3" WXGA (1280 x 800) X-black LCD
NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7400 notebook graphics processing unit with Total Available Graphics Memory of 335 MB
DVD±RW/±R DL/RAM drive
Built-in "Motion Eye" Digital Camera (30 frames per second, 0.3 Mega Pixels) with Motion Picture Function (max. resolution (pixels) VGA/640*480/raw data)
Hard disk protection (G-Sensor HDD Shock Protection)

And apple is your user icon and yet you don't own a mac? Odd...

Anyway, I think buying an electronic device because it is a "fashion accessory" might possibly be the worst reason for doing so.

i wont argue with that because you're right to an extent, but the fashion accessory is just a bonus if i ever take it anywhere, consider it like taking your mobile around would you rather have a sony k800i which has everything or an iPhone which has everything but its more fashionable....

And my icon is apple because i joined this site hoping to get info on apple computers. Simple as that really

Hmmm. Any chance you could get both? :P

I'm not so sure I could ever decide, they're both extremely nice laptops. I'm leaning towards the Macbook, I'm sure it would be a fun thing to learn how to use. It might take some getting used to since you've only used XP. But much fun.

As for the Sony, you have the advantage on gaming, more compatibility, except for the fact that it's Vista, so less drivers. But Windows is a known OS, and more and more people are going to switch over to it in the next, year to 2 years. Soon enough, maybe in about 2 to 3 years, (In my opinion) I think the majority of people are going to have it. It's just like the switch from 98, 2000 and ME, to XP. After people tried XP, they were hooked, and most likely never switched back. So if they try Vista, and see nothing wrong with it, they'll stay with it. And get used to the fact that there's something new.

But then there's the fact that Macbooks can be nicer in a lot of ways. More useful programs are included, user friendly interface. And it's a got a nice look to it. There's all kinds of fun stuff you can do with it. Also, if you have an iPod, iTunes isn't so much of a pain on the Mac as it is in Windows. So that's always a plus :P

In the end, I really couldn't decide on which one to get. They both have they're ups and downs. And they're both really nice. It's your decision.

Go for the macbook defiantely, you will love mac osx. really nice to change from XP. I run both windows and mac and prefer the mac for everything except gaming and as you say your not fussed about gaming then mac all the way. I got a macbookpro and had no issues at all.

I can assure you will be happy with it!

I think the Sony Laptop would be a better choice. But IMO of course.

i wish some people would back up their opinions lol!! Why you think so?

Halian cheers for the help, the way u described is exactly how i see the situation, i just cant decide whats the best way.

Im a member of Talkaudio.co.uk and they are all saying macbook because its the best of both worlds and because sony is overpriced even though i said i didnt mind.

Im leaning towards the macbook of course, but one thing thats really niggling is the fact it has poor (extremely rubbish) speakers and its just impossible to hear music on them. Also the lack of GPU etc. Im excited mostly about buying something thats new and refreshing, and learning a new OS would be fun for me. I just dont know people!!!!

I'm thinking you should go with a Macbook. I'm sure it would be loads of fun to learn and use. The speakers are bad, as you've said. But that's what headphones are for :P

Sure the GPU isn't that great. But you can do so much on a Mac that you won't even think about gaming. There's so many programs that you can fun with, and nothing will really slow down at all. iTunes is a breeze, you can mess around with Garage Band, iPhoto, and everything else that's on there. Plus, if you want a laptop with Windows on it. You can install XP and duel boot! So you'll have a two in one laptop. Not a bad deal I would say :D

I'm going with the VAIO. My dad has one from work and it's powerful and very light. The speakers are outstanding onthe VAIO. The MacBook does look nicer and Mac OS-X is no doubt fun to use. It depends what you want. The VAIO my dad has is for work so I've never listened to something loudly, just the odd bit of Pink Floyd.

lmao

If you can afford it then why not the macbookpro, the cheapest model comes with a 128mb x1600 which would be suitable for most games. Also the speakers are much better than the macbook ones, obviously not much bass but there good enough. Plus thats only 50quid more than the sony.

Sounds like it suits what you want, am i right?

i've been told a mac 'would change my computing life' by more than one person...reduced freeze up's, everything easily accessible / user friendly and of course it's sexy!...so i'm up for a challenge and have just got a new macbook 2.0ghz core duo 2 in an ebay auction.

go go go get a mac baby!

my PC died, so now I just have my macbook pro (not that the pc was great) but I love it, simply because I have windows and mac OS on it, it runs every game I have put onto it, sure you will only have a mac book but if you don't like it then you can always just run it in windows (not that you wouldn't like it) plus they are just as small as a sony, if not smaller.

im leaning towards macbook, and that isnt because of my normal prefercnces. first off, the mac is cheaperfaster, and isnt vista lol plus if u wanna play games, just downloada frikin windows onto itand dualboot it . mac does that great nowadays thanks to intel :)

i would get the pro but:
1) i dont want a large screen as 13 will do me fine
2) i watched HL2 running on a macbook pro, it was terrible and laggy
3) its double the price nearly for a big screen and GPU
4) its not as portable, nor does it look as cool

Well, those are good reasons. Made any headway on which laptop you want? :)
