The woman thinks I'll get cancer from my monitor

Hi there. I have a ladyfriend who doesn't know anything about computers. I know a good amount, but not everything, and she'd like a more educated opinion (the googles did nothing).

Basically, she's heard that monitors (CRT) can give off radiation. My crappy Sony TFT LCD thing flickers and the image is a little static-ish. It's this:

To her, its fishy behavior indicates that it is releasing "stuff" that's going to "give everyone cancer."

While I do believe it means my monitor is going to die soon, It's my understanding that LCD monitors can only hurt you if you manage to swallow the liquid in there.

Right? Second opinion?

Monitors are safe. Read here http://hps.org/publicinformation/ate/faqs/computervdtscreen.html

All television receivers (including computer monitors), regardless of type, must meet a mandatory federal performance standard so any x-ray emissions, if they exist at all, must be at very low levels. I am unaware of two types of radiation, unless you categorize the visible light which you see on the television screen as one type, which is, in fact an electromagnetic radiation; You can also consider radiowaves, which are also electromagnetic radiation. Both of these types of radiation are nonionizing and generally considered safe unless one is exposed to very intense levels.

I would do this to the ladyfriend... (can't stop laughing) You know those lead aprons they make you wear(for xray) at the dentist office, get one of those and put it nearby... Get an oxygen tank, radiation suit, and the meters that measure radiation. Just put them all on, and the radiation meter on the desk... Then when she sees you next, LOL!

Of coarse INTELCRAZY hasn't had a ladyfriend for a while...

lol im staying out of that one,

I'm a radiation therapist (treat cancer, radiation expert as well)

TV's DO irradiate radiation, it called LIGHT!!!!!!!!!

if you ingest chemicals such as those found in tv's, cancer will be the least of my worries, more important is to see a shrink or doctor to prevent/cure any immediate danger to oneself/others

IF (im not saying there is) there was harmful (ionising) radiation coming out, trust me, it would me much more dangerouse taking a drive on your local roads than sitting in front of it watching it - how many people you know been in a car accident? now how many people you know who have had cancer?

There are now also emereging and very plausible theories that are saying low levels of radiation are actually good for you (as they initiate DNA repair) furthermore, there is no data that proves anything will happen to us if we are irradiated low levels of radiation.

I work in a uranium mine now as a radiation advisor, and the amount of radiation we are exposed to here, would need to be about 15-20 times greater tham our MAX dose a year to have any visible/documentable efftects on us (the word here is "deterministic" if u interested, and excludes cancer/genetic effects)

Exactly. I have an IT textbook right here that basically says monitors can't kill you unless someone hits you in the head really hard with one.

I made her desktop a screenshot of the page that says monitors aren't X-rays. I don't think she knows how to change it.

She's outta control. Just today she brought home some fish-oil pills because she thinks they make cholesterol go away or something, so I had to return those to the store for her.

She needs another kind of pill.

One of my friends used to work at IBM (now owns a gun shop) said that early CRT did give off radiation and that 3 out of the 4 he was working with died of cancer
