A guide? ummm? google it? Your best guide would be to play around with it.

And why do you want to get linux?

Or if he doesnt have a cd burner. Since ubuntu is free and they like giving out money. You can order the cd's and they'll be posted to you in the mail. May take some time :P.

TY blueplum

really, you never heard of linux!!! it is open source so that means people make it like you or me. the only think with linux is you NEED to know the terminal. but else you need to download the image.

i use fedora. there are over 100 distros of linux.

Thing is Ive seen the versions that linux sell...
that's why I never knew..
So whats the best version?
And why?

HAHAAH that is the TRUE question of linux.

I like fedora, others like bsd, some like unix, some like ubuntu, some like knoppix, some like debian, some like damn small linux............

It is really what you are most confertable with. Most start off with ubuntu since it is the top used, secount is fedora and so on. all have there advantages and disavanteges

yes Ubuntu is the most popular. The Disadvantage of ubuntu is running Games. You can run most .exe files under wine but some just wont work. So.... Ubuntu= good first linux, ok lurning curve, good for everything besept intense gaming. And the one upside. They give it away.

o no there is 100 upsides, like lamp config, smb server, dhcp, radius, firewall... linux+windows is like a complet computer

You can have Windows and linux running at sametime. Wats it called? virtual machine? needs alot of ram tho, Just duel boot, so you can have windows and linux/ubuntu.

Eh Virtual Machine is nice idea.
And no, it doesn't take much memory, but if you plan on playing games on it, you'd need a lot to be faster, true.

http://www.linux.org Has a very extensive library of various Linux Distros. For someone new to Linux, the Ubuntu Family offers a very nice transition, while still being a super-powerful tool. It also allows long-time users to have the customizability for continued use. Combined with perhaps the best Open Source Community Forums out there, is why it's so popular.

If you're interested in trying, download the Live CD version and burn it to a CD as a .iso file. Boot to it from BIOS and let it load up. Since the entie OS will load from the CD, it will take a few minutes, but once it's up and running, you'll have access to the entire OS (via the CD and your RAM) so you can poke around a bit and see what it has to offer. If you like it, there is an option to install it from the Live CD Desktop.

Keep in mind that it's advised you have at least some knowledge of dealing with partitions before you install if you decide to duAl boot it with another OS.
