Intel vs. Intel

I'm building an ultimate performance pc, and it has come down to the processor. I'm looking for the best performance CPU, and money is no object. I'm trying to decide between the Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor and the Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Extreme Edition.

the Quad core seems good for multitasking, but the Pentium 4 has a higher clock rate. Which is really the ultimate?

If you can afford to wait, and money is not an object, I would hold out until the release of the 45nm Quad core CPUs later this quarter.

You are correct. The 45nm technology overclocks like a dream.

Alright, but what about the Xeon processor? Is it any good? I like it because it fits in a motherboard that supports DDR3.

I take that back.. you are right, they are for servers. I do not know about putting Xeon's in a PC. This does seem like a good idea to me, but I am not sure if you can do it.

Are they? On the intel website, it said they were for servers or workstations, and i was wondering if they would work in a high performance desktop?

Yeah, the problem with getting a Xeon processor is that the motherboards that support it do not support DDR3 RAM. Which do you think would add to the better performance, the DDR3 or the Xeon?

The ram would not add to the CPUs performance, but it would add to system performance overall. I am suggesting to go with one of the 45nm CPUs from Intel, and a ASUS X38 that utilizes DDR3 RAM.

Also agree. That is a good one. It is the only 45nm Quad that was released prior to Jan 20th I believe.

This is for your information, not necessarily a recommendation. Intel plans to release it's Skulltrail motherboard sometime soon. This motherboard will allow you to run two Xeon processors in a desktop environment. You'll also have the ability to run SLi. I've read the price will be anywhere between $300-$600.

As maroon1 suggested, the QX9650, or even the soon to be released Q9450 would be the best options.
