ive found a gd deal on a xeon processor, but not really heard of that model from intel, is it mainstream or more a server kind of thing

It's geared towards server-use. Depending on your MoBo and the kind of Xeon CPU, it may work on your system. Best bet is to just use a normal desktop CPU.

It's for servers. It can be very tempting when you see the specs of those processors with such a low price, but it's not meant for everyday computing.

What's your budget? You can save the extra $ and get the E2180. I have my E2160 running at 2.7GHz, stock is 1.8GHz. ;)

I'm sure you can go further than 3.0GHz with good cooling.

Yeah, those E21x0's seem to be pretty tough. Every review I read said they would OC like a champ and not even flinch. I opted for the E4500 though, but that was only a last-minute decision, else it would have been the E2180.

yes but i also heard that the e6xxx can also be overclocked like a bi*** too
and plus having the extra cache too on the e6 range would be hell of an advantage, no?

The cache will only benefit you mainly if you play games, and I doubt you'd notice a big difference.

Save the extra ~$50 and get a E2xxx series. Unless of course you really really want an E4xxx or E6xxx and money is not really an issue...

thing is you are saying save $50 dollars but here in uk i can get the e2180 for £46 and the e6400 for e6400 for £60 which is only £14 difference and for that because i play alot of games will be worth it i think

Oh, nevermind thats a good deal, go for the E6400! :D

Hehe sorry for the ignorance, I didn't pay attention to your location :o

lol its ok, i get paid soon and jus want to be sure of my parts before so i can prepare for when i get paid , so far im planning on

core 2 duo E6400
2gb OCZ ddr2 6400ram
ati radeon 1950xtx 512 uber edition

what u guys this of the above for playing games

It looks pretty decent. The 2GB @ 800MHz vs 1GB @ 400MHz will really boost up your games. And I'm sure the X1950XTX can handle the newest games in med-high.

;)

mobos are overrated

Umm...not really! In order to see full potential of a CPU, a decent MoBo is often needed. The Gigabyte ramodkk linked is a great Board. if you want to spend a bit less, look for the P31 version instead of the P35. Also, the Abit IL9 Pro is nice (if a bit outdated, but completely usable!), too.

basically for the mobo, im looking for something obviously decent but the most important part is 4 dimm slots so i can run memory in dual channell
