hello, i am new to dis forum and computer stuff. i dont know anything about computers besides good RAM= fast computer. my goal in life is to build my own computer. i have couple questions before i get started:

Should i build one? would it be a waste of time and money?
how much money should i put into to build a good computer?
how long does it take to build one?
Is it hard?
how should i prepare for it?

plz be gentle with me...:)

If you do not know anything about computers you may want to learn more before attempting your own build(go to the library and I think they have computer building for dummies, if I'm not mistaken, they always lay things out very nicely in those dummies books, I would highly recommend checking it out first..), it's not very hard to build one, but if you do not know what you are doing you could ruin the parts and basically throw money out the window...

Memory is just one factor in your speed.. There's CPU power, Graphics, etc, BUT if you go cheap on your motherboard, those components may not get the speed you payed for and thus another waste of money..

The computer in my signature costed me around $530 with shipping, tax, etc.. And I would have built it in a few hours, but I ran into problems, IE I forgot a CPU fan since I was so excited, and thus had to wait till the next day to go buy one.. Then I wen to clone my drive since I was getting a bigger one, I had a lot of problems there before I found good software that did it in no time..

The key is taking out the time to read up on it, and if you have patience, because you can easily get pissed..lol
 
so the motherboard is where everything connects to?
im a little confused about the front side bus and the hypertransport. what r their functions and y r they important?
im not sure but, some motherboards rnt compatible with other cpu?

It's alright. We all have to start out somewhere :p.

Yes, the motherboard is where everything is connected to.

For bus, hypertransport and functions, I never use them.

Some CPUs cannot work with some motherboards. A chip may have to many or to few pins to fit right.
 
Another thing that REALLY helps, but a really cheap (its better if it works) computer to disassemble and resemble, you get a good feel for where stuff goes and how to connect it all. Also, motherboards are compatible with CPUs based on the Socket of the cpu/mobo.

Just a FYI, REMEMBER COOLING PRODUCTS!!!! I forgot my cpu fan and well let's just say I could have screwed up my CPU, also remember to make sure memory and CPU all are compatible with your motherboard, and your Motherboard fits your case, and umm, proper case fan sizes too.. I think that's all for now..
 
thx, but how do u check if ur mother board is compatible with all the cpu and memory, and that it fits your case.

what is better, AMD Athlon or Intel's pentium 4/ celeron?

also, are RAIDs neccessary?

the total came out to be 344.71 but somehow that seems very cheap.
am i forgeting something?

Well for starters Celeron's suck In my opinion.. Now I have 2 computers one with AMD the other With Intel..

I think Intel's Pentium 4 with HT, or Dual Core is better, but There will probably be a ton of posts that go back and forth.. I would compare the specs for the same speed on each, and see what you think will work best for what you want..

sorta. i wont get celerons. i was thinking about dual core but i figured this is gonna be the first computer i build and i might mess it up and i dont wanna spend too much. thx thou

So, i wont need a RAIDs? and do i have everything i need to build a computer?
