Looking for a way to protect my new computer

I am about to build a computer and due to unforeseen I can't use another computer to connect to the internet and be my meatshield :(
So I want a way to protect my Comp from viruses/spyware/anything thing bad
I know of software programs but I don't want to slow down my comp with a CPU HOG on my other Computer I had Zonealarm and it was good until recently when it has started to suck and become a HOG like Norton did. Now my computer is going to be way faster than any other computer I have had so I don't know if a CPU HOG really means anything with a gaming comp and it being so fast
I've heard about Hardware anti-virus/spyway/firewall stuff but I don't know of good brands and do they work as well? The thing about software anti-virus/anti-spyware/Firewall is I just don't want to slow down my performance. Any help is appreciated. If you want/need my comp specs just ask.

Well, an anti-virus software it won't slow your PC down unless you have a slow (and maybe full) hard drive, or/and low RAM memory (like 512 MB on xp or 1 GB on vista, or lower). You should get AVG, it's a very good antivirus. Other top anti-virus software are Kaspersky, BitDefender. It's your choice here.

Yes it CAN mainly due to realtime scanning in background(Norton is well known for this)

AVG 8.0 is good, also use CCleaner, to keep this clean.....
IMO.... AVG has a low detection rate due to less virus definitions, is not updated as regurly as others and has servers that are usually "too busy to update at this time"

Just because an AV says "NO problems found" it's not the same as "NO problems"

but then I guess you have to do regular disinfections on people pc's to understand how poor AVG really is :p and I certainly wouldn't go recommending it to people myself(IMO)
people will be suggesting SPYBOT next!!!

So then what about a [something] to protect my computer?
and yeah norton real-time scanning fail since it can't be in everyplace and the same time I virus could slip through and it is a CPU HOG

Well If you're looking for freeware solutions I would say

Have used both to great success on peoples machines as a free protection solution ;)

I really don't care about the cost of the protection system if it works
I wanna keep my computer safe I don't even want a potential virus to have a chance to get to it.

Ok in that case I would suggest PANDA
I have used it for over 4 years now and have had absolutly no issues that I can recall, but get the Titainium version as the Platinum one with the firewall is a little heavy on some systems but the AV side of it is superb !!

Don't know if you are in UK or what but I get Panda titainium (3 licences) for £18.00 for a year- it updates everyday and enables you to create rescue disks and all the usual stuff you get with a quality AV :)

I would still maybe suggest Commodo over the built in F/wall of M$ but it does seem to be a bit too good and cause issues if you network PC's together ;)

AntiVirus. (check out www.av-comparitives.org)
Firewall.
+ One additional Spyware/Adware scanner.

AntiVirus, the best paid AntiVirus IMO is the paid version of Avira AntiVir, ESET's NOD32, Kaspersky Antivirus. Make sure you only have one antivirus. If you are going free, the most user friendly is AVG Free, and I recommend it the most because unlike the Free version of Avira, it scans for Spyware while Avira doesn't. Another alternative is Avast! Antivirus, but I find it's user interface like a MP3 player and it's hard to use.

Firewall, there are lots of good free alternatives. Sunbelt Kerio's is a good Firewall, and the free version and paid version don't alter by much. If you are most worried about performance, get the COMODO Firewall Pro. I'm using Comodo's Firewall right now. It makes you accept for a lot of things, if you find it annoying you can just add the application to your 'trusted application' list so it doesn't nag you when you are installing or loading programs.

For a Anti-Spyware/Adware, I recommend Spybot Search & Destroy, A-squared Free + Ad-Aware 2008. All programs are relatively easy to use, and are highly recommended. You can download all 3 to have on your computer, but make sure only 1 runs on Startup or they will not function properly. Hope that helped.

if you are willing to pay i would reccomend Eset smart security , its about £40 a year but well worth it IMO if you are serious about keeping our PC secure
it uses a pretty small amount of memory , i run it on an XP computer with 512mb ram and it dosent cause any problems there the computer is still quite responsive

Compared to previous versions of NOD32 it is pretty easy to use with most of the advanced settings hidden away although you can still access them from my experiences it is pretty straight forward even when you go into the advanced settings

i use it and the firewall rarely gives me messages which i like alot although if i try and go on a site it knows is bad it will block it which i also like

Kaspersky + Eset Nod32. The difference between Kaspersky Antivirus and Kaspersky Internet Security is that there is a firewall, same with the Nod32 antivirus and Nod32 smart security.

I've actually been seriously looking in to ESET Smart Security which includes ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0 along with a 2 way firewall. It seems to be getting strong reviews from the people as well as from independent review companies. What do you all think?
