Best cheap computer (very cheap)

I need a computer for my vacation home and I don't want to lug around the laptop every time I go there. I just need a computer for general internet usage and word processing, but I would like it if it wasn't as slow as molasses.

The first one I thought of was the Asus Eee Box. I don't want to pay any more than $350.

I suppose the EEE box would work. But you want a duo box or x2 anyway

You should consider the MSI wind PC. It's just a little over $100, but you'll have to just add your own memory, optical drive, and hard drive. It shouldn't cost over another $100 for that.

The Wind PC looks fine, except that it doesn't have an OS, and I don't want Linux on it. And with the optical drive, HDD and memory, it will probably cost more than the EEE box.

Oh yea, that's true. I always forget about software and OS in computer builds. If you look at just the hardware part of it, you can hunt deals down, like 2x2gb memory for $25 AR, DVD burner for $15, and 160gb HD for $40.

why don't you get a netbook if it's just for internet browsing and word processing. in the UK, the prices for netbooks are almost the same price as the low end PCs. and a netbook is more mobile than a laptop.

Come shopping where I work :D

You could get a Compaq Evo and a 17" LCD for about $299.

Must not be much of a laptop then :p

But as stated above, MSI wind would be a good option. Its like 130$ and you could easly get the rest of the parts for under 220$

Also for the OS, consider running Ubuntu (or some other distro of linux). Its free, runs smoothly on lower end computers, and from what it sounds like, would simply suit you well. It'd be fine for web browsing and emailing, maybe a little word processing.

Why not self build?

EDIT: Oh yeah... as epidemik said, try Ubuntu... and no worries about word processing. It's got OpenOffice in it, which is quite compatible with most common formats.

Also, the ASUS board in my sig should do you nicely... in fact, you could build a very similar rig to mine and keep it within the budget.

Don't do it! :p 20GB HD! 256MB RAM! CELERON!!!!!!!! EEK! Seriously man, you don't want that... I was stuck with a very similar rig a while ago and MAN... Just... don't buy it. The monitor may be fine, but I've had a very bad experience with eMachines.

If worse comes to worse you could just head down to Wal-Mart, they have cheap builds that aren't that bad and will suit your needs. Not to mention the holiday sales that possibly are on them.

I still say he should build an AMD rig... he'd get a LOT more for his money.

How about this?

This is loads better than both the Wind PC and the EEE Box, except more RAM will need to be added. I don't think I can get a better deal than that.

That should be fine... just make sure you downgrade to XP, otherwise it'll be pretty slow... you could still get a rig that's a lot nicer if you were to build, but if your not comfortable with doing that the Compaq should do the trick. :)
