Hi,
Please can anybody help and advise a solution to my problem.
I have just bought a fairly used laptop with its os already install on it, I bought it with no disc even not with the recovery disk, now that I want to change the hard drive to a lager one , please how do you think I can make it work with his os. The laptop has got the os key at the back of the case. Thank you all.

Yes I can see that you are quite blue (sad) about that
But as I prefer black on white I'll try to keep to forum default (hint hint)

OEM Laptops are usually now sold with recovery partitions, and not the Restore disc (basically it saves the manufacture money, and makes them extra money too)

Please contact your computer manufacture support site and order a Recovery disc (they are very cheap, lots cheaper than buying a retail version of Windows)

I hope you are now not blue anymore ;)

Thank you so much. I have tried the manufacturer, I was told that there was no recovery disc for this item, I was adviced to try if I can get a recovery disc on the ebay. I discovered somewhere to buy the data recovery disc but warned that it will not include the os.
If I may ask you please what use is the license key or the product key at the bottom of the laptop top when lost the os that come with the system.
Once more thank you.

Here are some common Restore discs: http://www.user-guides.co.uk/
Actually not sure if they are the full OS Restore discs (but I'm pretty sure yes) If yours is listed, just contact them and ask

BUT

Your computer Manufacture must hold the OS Restore discs
Unless the computer is just way to old to support any longer (ie I don't think they'll have Windows ME restore discs :D

What is your computer Manufacture and Model number?
What is the system OS that is on it ? (Windows XP Pro/Home/Media center?)

Thank you Kimsland.
My laptop is Toshiba SA30-213 with xp home, since I have acquired this laptop from a previous user who said he just loaded the window when I was buying it. I had thought that I could just change the hard drive to a lager size, but I just realise that I will need an os whenever I upgrade the hard drive. From your experience please what could you suggest to enable me solve this problem. Could you think that another restore disc of my other Toshiba A60 could serve any purpose?

As it is a discontinued item, info HERE
You may want to try THIS site
Or contact Toshiba directly HERE, and ask if they still sell Recovery discs
Or even try eBay or contact the sellers

No your Toshiba A60 won't help
Also have I spoke to you before Bigsola, possibly somewhere else?

you can image your hard drive into another higher capacity hard drive by using norton ghost. This will copy exactly what is in your present hard drive. all you need to do is to buy the same hard drive with bigger capacity and do the imaging process. you dont need to re-install OS and your old drive will be your backup. :D

Norton Ghost (I use this one)
Acronis True Image (most users like this one, images and backup incrementally)
Acronis Migrate Easy (Just disk clone - quite good!)
Drive Image (Basically an alternative)
DriveImage XML (This one is free!)
MaxBlast (I haven't used this, but it's free)
pc-disk-clone(Home Edition: Up to 2GB/min, Pro Edition: Up to 7GB/min)

Imaging: Backs up your entire system, including Windows and data, plus your partition as well. The image can be stored on removable media, such as DVD. And usually takes under an hour (depending on size of image) to fully recover to a blank HardDrive.
