How to play these video files?

i've got a few video files that use supposedly .avi format, but when i try to play them using windows media player, it says there is an error downloading codec and then it only plays the sound, no image. what went wrong here?
also, there r a few files that r supposedly videos but goes under the .mkv format.. what the heck is that i cant play these 'videos' either.

wat shud i do to be able to play them properly?

download vlc player and you should play them o.k

K-Lite mega codec pack should help. Google for a download. Current version is 5.8.

No more worries about codecs, compatibility issues, etc etc etc. It plays just about everything I throw at it... Finally, a media player that just does what it's supposed to do without me having to spend hours downloading patches and plugins.
