Hi everyone,

My computer that I use in my workshop finaly took a crap, I was given 2 desktops over the past few weeks, I want to know what one is better. I am going to use the better one in my workshop just for internet, playing music and printing things out of ms word. The other desktop I will be giving to replace my aunts old windows ME pc..... anyway here are the 2 desktops in questions:

1: HP Pavilion a710e- I got this desktop from my fire dept, they have used it for a few years never a problem, it is factory restored with windows xp pro sp3 installed. specks are:

AMD Athlon 3500+ 2.20ghz
1GB PC3200RAM
80GB HD
DVD-RW
FireWire
8USB ports, Front sound, USB firewire,

2: Dell Dimension 3000- Given to me by a friend

Celeron 2.66ghz
1GB PC2100 RAM ( windows sees 768mb )
80GB HD
Win XP Pro SP3
8USB ports, Sound ports, floppy drive in front
DVD-ROM
CD-RW

Just would like to know the better one I should use for basic use. Please let me know what you think of these systems, I would buy a new one for down here but I am down here 3 our 4 times a month and I just spent enough money building my main desktop this past week. Thanks in advance!

the first one also appears to have a dvd burner which is good for almost 5gb of files backup per disc. It also has the faster memory and if there is an issue with the second pc not ever being able to recognize the remaining memory then theres a problem because 768 mb ram is just not enough.

768 is alright for XP as long as there's not something huge eating it up. Including what's held back for the IGP, I usually run around 400-650MB until my wireless driver fills up, though so far it seems that what johnb showed me has fixed that...

Because the older celeron processors are really slow even though they have a higher speed. The amd processor will beat the celeron listed in the dell machine.

Why is the AMD considered the better processor? AMD = 2.20ghz, whereas Celeron = 2.66ghz

You have to remember that the clock speed (MHz/GHz) is not an accurate measure of performance. The ONLY time that you can compare processors by clock cpeed is when they are of the exact same architecture, with the same amount of cache. (example- Core 2 Duo E8400 vx Core 2 Duo E8600...the only difference is the clock)

If they're different designs, then the clock speed is much less of a factor. For example, a single core Core 2 processor at about 2.2GHz will be faster than a Pentium 4 at 3.2GHz, because it will have more cache and can execute more instructions per clock cycle.
