Mega PC for work! i7 build maybe

Hello all,

I will be looking into either buying or building a meaty PC with as much processing power as possible. The applications we use here generate GPS signals and require a lot of processing power (the MD's i7 quad core with HT takes more than a few hours to process these files).

The applications can be ran in a x64 environment and will utilize all the cores and the HT if available. The computer does not have to be pretty just a couple of big HDD's Decent motherboard few gig of RAM and one (or more) powerful processors.

Been given a budget of 3,000 GBP... what do you guys think?

Thanks,
Steve

maybe, was looking at the Xeons (X5670) but they cost so much money!

what ever that will crunch through as much data in the shortest period of time under 3,000

whether its 1x i7 or 2x xeons, I dont know...

Wow sounds like you guys need atleast a i7 980x to process all that data windows 7 professional and atleast 6 gb of ram possibly even 12 gb lol. With all this already purchased you probally whack a ati 5870 in there cause you can. And a decent X58 motherboard gigabyte or asus. All this should do the trick :)

Don't you need alot of Graphics processing power? The HD4350 just won't cut it. Other than that, looks good so far.

no the computer will be data crunching so it will only affect the CPU. I have a cheap GPU just so I can see the progress etc..

cool 4.4 seems a nice figure, wonder what ppl have got them on water.

4.72GHz on standard W/C fan radiator, 5.0GHz w/phase cooling (basically a fridge), not sure about dry ice or liquid nitrogen. The unlocked multiplier helps alot, obviously.

Source: CustomPC article about the effectiveness of water chillers.

If you need loads of raw power I would suggest getting a dual 1366 motherboard and getting 2 i7-950. that would give you 8 cores for $600 instead of 6 for $1000.

I didn't think there were any dual socket boards that allow you to run i7 920-970 based CPUs. All that i have seen have to run the 5500, 5600 Intel server CPUs (or the i7-980x like in the EVGA SR-2).

yep skulltrail all the way, imagine the processing power

8 cores + 16 threads yum yum.....

i dont think there is one released for the i7 cpu's, im sure there are equivelant xeon's out there that run in the skulltrial!

Stay away from OCZ Ram. they aren't producing it anymore and good luck if you get a dud stick.

dual xeons will be the best/most powerful solution you could build/buy. Expect to spend about $3k though.
