gmod using portal as the source engine

how come when i try and purchase gmod i wont work? i have portal and it works as the source engine?

I'm not sure how you purchased Gmod. But on the steam page It clearly states that you need a source game that
1. Isn't a demo
2. Isn't portal or a mod (I think theres one other game)

You need HL2, Counter strike:Source, or Team Fortress 2 in order to run Gmod.

dang but i also found out that it says hl2 deathmatch works but i have that and it still wont work.

This game requires that you own a Source engine game such as Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2, or Day of Defeat: Source. Click here for a full list of games that meet this requirement. Please note that Portal: First Slice and the bundled Half-Life 2: Deathmatch do not fulfill this requirement.

Basically, if you get HL2: DM off of that nvidia offer, you can't use it.
