small upgrade

I need to upgrade my wifes computer for her because I am buying myself a new one and she is totally jealous. The only game she plays is world of warcraft and she has to run the video settings pretty low to not have much lag. The spec are...

dell diminsion dxp061
intel core 2 6300 @1.86GHz 1.86GHz
RAM 3.00 GB
Windows Vista 32bit
Graphics radeon 4650

Could I just get more ram and a better graphics card and power supply? What would be the cheapest way to improve her online gaming? Thanks

your ram looks not to bad 3gb is decent, but your cpu is really slow, i would certainly upgrade that first either to a faster dual core, or if your board can take it a quad core.

At 3GB RAM not seeing that as the weak point. Not even really seeing the 4650 as that. What is the intraface on the GPU. AGP, PCIe? If AGP I think 4670 is the best you can do. CPU? I can't see that for a game. Overall that is a well balanced system.

Ok so just changing to like a quad core will boost the computer up enough to get higher frame rates and less lag in games? If so can someone recomend one for me.

Sorry for being a noob but i dont know what the intraface, AGP or PCIe is :(

The connector for your GPU/graphics card.

I would be very careful upgrading CPU to increase frame rates. I don't 100% think that might not help I am just cautious. I might look up later but WoW recommends a P4 and all C2D toast them. That is one reason why I said well balanced system. To improve frame rates or detail GPU is the obvious.

What resolution screen is the wife playing on. How much memory does the 4650 have?

Not sure about the monitor but she is playing wow at 1152x864 resolution.
She said if she goes any higher her icons and everything get smaller and dont look right. The 4650 is 512mb. I was looking at getting a ati 5670 1gb for her if that would be a a increase in fps.

Icons being too small sounds like personal preference so no worry. Yes a 5670 would be a step up. Confirm the connection is compatible, AGP, PCIe and so on. At that resolution 512MB is more than enough. But you will gain from 5670.

I don't know if that machine can support a quad core CPU...Dell isn't very good about updating the BIOS's.

A 5670 would be perfectly ok. That's about the fastest card you can get without needing secondary power from the PSU.

Go for a 5670.

Don't bother changing the CPU, that's still an excellent processor. A friend's rig with E6300 @ 1.86ghz paired with a 4770 was able to handle Crysis at medium details at 1440x900. WOW? Come on.

Thanks for all the input. Ill get the 5670. Hopefully she will be satisfied with the performance till I can buy her another computer next year.:D

Keep the 4650 around, so you can put it back in later on. When you build her another computer, unless it just needs to be a monster, you can add a second 5670 on and put them in the new rig. That'd be about the same speed as a 5770, maybe a bit more...plenty for WoW.
