AMD build soon

Hi guys I am brand new to this forum as you can see and I was wondering what you guys thought of the setup I am thinking of building. It will be my very first custom/gaming PC so I'd like to get some opinions before I go out and buy all the stuff. The setup is in my sig and I don't feel like typing it all again sorry. Any suggestions are very welcome and tell me if I'm missing something.

Thanks!

you may want to wait a month or two for bulldozer to come out. BD is expected to be much faster than the current generation.

AMD prices are generally not real bad when they first release to the market. AMD is going to have to compete with Intel's new line of processors so prices are going to have to be low in order for people to buy. Zambezi Core processors will be out before June 30, 2011. They are definitely worth the wait.

At manufacturer settings Zambezi Core will use DDR3 1866 RAM. What this translates into is the memory is going to be about 30 percent faster than what present AMD processors use. And the processing power is going to be much better as well.

Edit: Good things come to those who wait :)

If you do not feel like typing out your list again do a copy and paste :)

I would pick this hard drive over the Hitachi drive you are looking at as it has a faster data transfer rate and a 5 year warranty:

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1 Terabyte 7200 RPM 64MB Cache Serial ATA Hard Drive - $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...aviar_Black_WD1002FAEX-_-22-136-533-_-Product

Here is a good power supply:

Antec EarthWatts EA650 650 Watt Continuous Power Power Supply - $74
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na&AID=10521304&PID=4169961&SID=fdt0z1ypq751

Any specific reason you are picking 8 gigabytes of RAM over 4 gigabytes?

Thanks for the suggestions. That HDD does seem nicer. But i think i'm gonna opt for a PSU with a little more juice because i may end up going with crossfire GPUs.

That is very disappointing to me though to know that there is new processors coming out soon though, I am very impatient and wanted to start this build this week. But now i would Just feel obsolete, I don't think I will be able to afford the new CPU's but I think Microcenter has a 30 day return policy so if they come out and i indeed can afford them that would be nice :)

Microcenter may just replace a processor and hardware you buy with the exact same model so you will be stuck with what you bought. You won't be disappointed if you wait in my opinion.

I think Crossfire and SLI are over rated. Just get a really good video card and there will be no reason to Crossfire.

Some AM3+ motherboards are already out. Socket AM3+ main boards will support new AMD Zambezi Processors. Let me look around and get back.

Hmm thanks for the help.
I think I might just get the setup in my sig for now because microcenter doesnt have any AM3+ mobos yet but hey I'm getting the mobo and the processor for only 400 so if anything i can sell those for a little less if i feel like i need the Bulldozer processor that bad haha.

I bought such a board, but it was an 890GX with an AM3+ cpu socket. SLI will only be on the 900 series chipsets. Chances are that the BIOSes will be updated to support all Bulldozer features, and there will probably be a slew of more SLI hacks as well. Like 2048 said, I'd rather have a single powerful GPU over two of them, or two weaker ones. It means that when you come across a game that doesn't support either SLI or CF, you still get full performance.

Also for a power supply, I bought a Silverstone STF60-P. You can search it on newegg or tigerdirect or whichever site you prefer.

At this point, SLI will not be supported on all 990X/FX boards. So far its only manufactures that are not in partnership with AMD. AMD hasnt agreed on it to run on AMD chipsets.

Ah. I heard nvidia licensed it to AMD to run on the 900 series chipsets, but going to the motherboard manufacturers makes a lot more sense there. But either way, there will be hacks to get SLI running :D

Well really SLI and Crossfire will run on any chipset board that has two PCIe X16 slots and enough PCIe lanes. Its the drivers that wont let it run. Like Intel that Nvidia and AMD got a deal with, they just have a bios code that lets it install on Intel chipsets.

So far AMD has said no to Nvidia, so the only deals Nvidia has got right now is with board manufactures that dont have a partnership with AMD. So that kinda knocks out Asus an Gigabyte, not sure if MSI does or not. Dont think Asrock is or Foxconn. But I understand why AMD has told Nvidia to stick it. lol

Bradleyg,

I think you are going to take a bigger hit than you think going with older computer chip technology when you go to sell it. When the new Zambezi processors come out the Phenom II processor prices are going to drop. You are costing yourself money. But, on the other hand, I also think the Phenom II Processor series are good.

You may want to look at the Phenom II 965 Quad-Core Processor over the Thuban Six-Core. Most programs just cannot utilize a six-core processor presently. You could overclock a Phenom II 965 to 3.7 gigahertz and save yourself some cash.

Phenom II 965 Quad-Core (3.4 gigahertz) Black Edition Processor - $141
