I've been looking into RTS games, but I don't wanna spend money on em unless I know I enjoy the style of gameplay. What are some free RTS's that are fun with a high playerbase? Thanks..

try supreme commander or the standalone expansion forged alliance, they are in my opinion the best RTS's ever (none of this starcraft 2 crap

Star Craft II seems to be taking the cake in terms of RTS games now a days. Much to the contrary of what Turbo says . The Total War games seem fun. I think the newest one is Shogun 2: Total War, the historic military games are interesting. I'm not exactly sure they constitute true RTS game play though. I've been out of PC gaming for awhile.

I personally LOVE playing Starcraft 2.
It has great graphics, great community, and it really tests your ability to think and do multiple things at the same time.
But since you're not sure if you're even going to like RTS games, you shouldn't go for SC2 just yet since it's around $50 and requires mid to high end graphics cards.
What i've been hearing is that a game called League of Legends (a.k.a. LoL) is very good. It is a near copy of HoN (not sure what it stands for) and DOTA (a custom map game from Warcraft 3).
Although it's not TECHNICALLY a RTS game, it has a huge playerbase and good reviews.
If you want to see what Starcraft is all about, you could probably look it up on Google for a portable version. The game's been out for more than a decade so i doubt it'll be a big deal to pirate it.

Yeah, haha, I tried LoL but couldn't get into it. I think I'm just impatient. I never uninstalled it so I'll probably give it another shot sometime soon. I just got SC2 through torrents, and I enjoyed it. I recently uninstalled it and I am probably going to purchase the game this week.
Steel Legions was released about three weeks ago, it's a browser game/MMORTS based on an 'alternate past'. So far, so good. Otherwise I know it's not an RTS, but Family Guy Online is coming out!!
