Hi,

I know nothing about computer networking. I just joined this forum because i want to teach myself "computer networking" and i know i will need guidance and words of wisdom :) I am a very good computer programmer though (C/C++, Java, Perl ...)

I have found a few things on Google. eg: http://www.techiwarehouse.com/cms/engine.php?page_id=d9e99072

Is there a course/website/tutorial you would recommend for a beginner?
Where will i start doing the cool cool stuffs? I don't even know what i mean by "cool stuff" :) But, i think i mean "the kinds of things i see on TV"

Thank you for your help

Herve

Your best bet is to pick up a book from a book store on Networking. After you gain the knowledge of networking, then that is when you discover "what is cool.. I guess."

I suggest looking for a school in your area that has a Cisco Networking Academy. That is by far one of the easiest ways to learn what you need. It'll cost you money though.

Second option is to look and see if you can take an online Cisco course for an intro to networking and progress from there.

Otherwise you can grab an intro to networking book and try it out on your own.

The Cisco Academy as mentioned above is a great idea, but if you were to go that route, then I would look on establishing a degree out of it, like Network Administration. Because, the Cisco Academy runs in Semesters, and everything will make a whole lot more sense if you are taking other networking classes along with Cisco Networking.

Otherwise, there is the online option, but I never did it online. I can only imagine the grief, pain, and headache involved with that! Haha Jk. Have fun though! Networking can be loads of fun.

This is a site you can get most of your answers, if you can pratice on it you will be better. Try do some readings, all the information in the books are on internet now too. just do a lot of reading and pratice, start with connecting two computers in different ways, then try to set up a network. If you is a programmer you should not have any problems.
Cheers.
