Can someone talk me through how to use windows server 2003 r2? I want to be able to use it for my house to allow all of my other computers to use one username to log on to it.

Why not server 2008, it's much better

anyway.. Install server 2003 on a computer
Install active directory and promote the server to a domain controller createing a new namespace

Install all the drivers
do all windows Updates
configure with a static IP

Are you going to user the server as your dhcp server or the router?

If the router is going to be the dhcp server you will have to configure all computers DNS to point to the server or they will not be able to connect to domain

If the Server is going to be the dhcp server you will have to install it and configure it. Then disable the router dhcp server or you will have problems.

Post back and I can explain further steps unless other people want to jump so I don't forget anything

At the moment the server is running through the laptop as I havent got the wires yet to do the layout there... I want to connect to "mums computer" though (she was win7 pro).

I have never used server so can you go through it step by step from logging on as ive just corrupted it (Somehow) and had to reinstall the os again :L THIS IS ALL NEW TO MEEEE :'(

Ok install server 2003 on the dekstop computer that will be your domain controller. The install will be very similar to an XP install. Post back once the install is done. If there is a part you are stuck stop and post a question.

When you say through the laptop what do you mean. is a virtual machine?

Uhmm why do you want to do this? If you don't have any knowledge at all at doing this kind of stuff it'll do more bad than good.

If you really want to go through with this do check your network topology. If that second router really functions as a router. So it's doing nat you'd have 2 separate subnets and if you're mums pc wants to access the other subnet you'd have to add a static route (this applies to any device in that subnet who wants to access the other subnet).

with that Network diagram you provided, you would end up in a world of headaches trying to accomplish what you are going after.

Why is it necessary to have a Server? Why are you trying to set one up inside your house?

You'd be better off just making the same user profile on all of your computers, so that you can have the same login on every PC. That would be a lot less frustrating if that is all you're trying to accomplish?
