I have a dell and a sonyo 42inch tv. I heard you could use a vga cable or an hdmi cable but the only problem is that my pc has a vga spot but my tv doesnt and my tv has an hdmi spot but my pc doesnt? Is there any way of connecting my computer to the tv?

If I buy a new PC without a monitor an I don't have a monitor at home to connect it with what do I do?

The computer has HDMI output port
My TV has 3 HDMI input ports

Will I need to initially connect it to a monitor or can I unbox it an plug straight into the tv?

A TV is basically just a monitor with TV-enabling hardware built in to it. You can connect to your TV with no problems, no need for a normal monitor.
Just make sure your TV is accepting the right HDMI plug in the source menu. It's often labelled HDMI1, HDMI2 etc.

Your PC will connect to a TV. As the last post stated, a monitor is simply a TV without TV capabilities. If your computer does not have an HDMI Out port, buy a VGA-HDMI converter. They are fairly cheap with it will do what you want. You can find them on Amazon or probably any electronics store.
