Totally Screwed up My Computer Can Someone Help Me Find System Restore Back Door Way

If any of you want to do your good deed of the year, I can totally use your help. Even though I'm pretty computer literate, I screwed my XP Desktop Computer up when I was changing some of my local Services in Administrative Tools in the Control Panel (I'm writing this on my laptop). I thought that if something got screwed up I could use System Restore. Unfortunately what happened is both the start bar and system restore disappeared along with other stuff and other than some my internet program working whose icon is on my screen there is nothing left to go through other than open files to get to my computer.

So what I want to do is somehow find a way to get into system restore and click restore and hopefully get this fixed. Can anyone tell me step by step how to find it by going through open files from my internet task by to my desktop.

Thank you for your help.

"Totally Screwed up My Computer Can Someone Help Me" really this part was not required ;)

Anyway, boot from the Vista disc, and then select System Restore

Boot your computer and press and hold Ctrl and Alt, then press Del

Start the Task Manager, File, New Task (Run), type msconfig, press Enter.

On the Services tab, Enable All, click Apply, then Ok. Reboot.

This should get everything back for you.

If you want to remove certain Services again, make sure you check the box that says "Hide All Microsoft Services" and then make your selections.

Hmm, I'm sure you said "Vista" before, but I read another thread incorrectly today so maybe its just me having a bad day

System Restore can be accessed if you restart your computer in Safe Mode (press F8 key on system startup)
Before entering the Desktop Windows will automatically ask you if you want to Restore your computer.

Also note that if you manually changed the System Restore in Services (start > run > services.msc) to Disabled, then you would have lost all Restore points, and therefore you will not be able to restore your computer to an earlier time.

In that case (System Restore not available) you may need to run a Windows Repair on your system.
Note: A Windows Repair will not lose any user data, but if you have Virus (or Malware) installed, then you may still have further issues.

Hi Jeff, welcome to the Computer Forum.

Jeff please be advised that this is a very old thread first started in 2009.
You can create a new topic HERE about your particular Operating System.

Although I won't make further replies on this particular (old) thread, I'll just provide one solution that may fix your issue.
Generally any computer that has come with Windows 7 and newer, will contain a restore image, usually accessible by pressing a Fn key on your keyboard on system startup. In many cases a menu may appear with 'repair Windows' (or similar.
You may need to contact the computer manufacturer on which specific key, and the procedures that follow.

Again, your best option is to create a new topic just for yourself.

Best of luck, and I hope you are able to get your Windows restored :)
