Tricking programs into thinking my desktop has lower resolution

I would like to know if there is some way of tricking a program into thinking that my desktop has a lower resolution than it really has. I have an eye tracking device for controlling the mouse, and it includes a sidebar which allows me to choose what kind of mouseclick I want to make. I have to sit somewhat closer than normal to my screen in order for my eyes to be properly tracked, but that means I have to look really far to the left or right to see the sidebar on my widescreen monitor. I have looked at smaller monitors, but they hardly seem to make them anymore. The ones that I have found seem only slightly skinnier in terms of their width, and their resolution is lower than what I would like. I tried lowering the resolution on my own screen, but didn't like it and switched back. But I noticed that when I switched back, my sidebar was temporarily stuck where it had been under the lower resolution. It took a second to recognize that the resolution was higher than it just been. I was wondering if I could somehow trick the sidebar into getting stuck permanently in the lower resolution position. I am not talking about hacking into the software. I just thought that there might be some program or Windows setting that I could change that might confuse the sidebar. By the way, I don't mind if it tricks all my other programs or the Windows taskbar. I can't really utilize the far edges of my screen.

That would be an easy solution, but the sidebar cannot be moved around the desktop. It has to be either on the left or right hand of the desktop.
