What phone to get?

I don't want to start with you again but you really need to shut up. You don't know his financial situation. He wants advice on his phone, not his budget. End of story. Stop.

That IS advice on HIS PHONE because it's telling him if he goes with a contract he can get a MUCH BETTER phone for A LOT LESS and he can then use it LONGER so it has absolutely 100% everything to do with advice on his PHONE.

Who says he pays for the service? I don't pay for my service. I just choose my device.

I mean who buys minutes if he uses any... And if his parents pay for the service on tmobile then why on earth spend $300 if he can get better for $20... He said he is sick of texting with a sluggish phone, so obviously he will have service of some kind wether prepaid or not.

I still don't see your point. I paid $349 for my Nexus 5 for two reasons:

1. It was the phone I wanted
2. Stock Android. No extra carrier crap installed on it
3. I needed a new phone anyway

You still think I should have gone with a carrier branded phone from AT&T?

We are talking about a 14yr old who is going to use Tmobile... He can get any phone he wants basically with a contract. He does not know what phone he wants he just has an idea, and I'll be you he'd take an S5 over a oneplusone any day...

If he GOES WITH A CONTRACT PHONE it will be a A LOT MORE in the long run BECAUSE YOU SPEND WAY MORE IN THE LONG RUN. There's a reason those phones are so cheap, it's because they ask outrageous prices compared to T-Mo, Straight Talk, etc.

Besides, T-Mobile doesn't even offer contracts any more. They have interest-free financing and outright purchasing on phones.

Ninja, I've heard great things about the OPO. I'd recommend a OPO, Moto X, or HTC One M8 or M7. There are some other good ones too. "It all depends on how much you want to spend and what's a good deal at the time.

Anyways, I think we're getting ready to switch to Cricket. T-Mobile gets sucky reception around here. Do any of you guys have any experience with Cricket?

I wrote in bold because Darren does not have the ability to read. And with a contract depend on who you get you do NOT pay more in the long run at all. Here you pay minimum $20 on a minute card that expires in 1 month and has very FEW minutes ( average $30 for 200ish mins ), or you get a contract for $25 a month unlimited call and text and 1gb of data which is a hell of a lot cheaper than any prepaid. Lets recap. Prepaid, only good for people who do not use the phone much. Not much at all. Contract, a lot cheaper than prepaid if you get a simple unlimited talk and text plan PLUS the phone is practically free.

I just switched to cricket. It's great.

Prepaid is not only for people who don't use a phone much. Look at T-Mobile, if you don't talk much you can get a 100 minute, unlimited text, and 5GB plan for $30/mo. If you go to Cricket, you can get unlimited text, unlimited data, and 2.5GB of data for $35/mo. Compare that to postpaid, and for a single plan you're looking at upwards of $50-100 per month for a comparable plan depending on the carrier, and that doesn't include the cost of the phone.

The cons of prepaid are that you don't get data roaming on most carriers, and you get lackluster support. It's great for heavy users as well as occasional users.

Phones you pay for monthly at the carrier are a good deal when paying for postpaid service, as they give you a discount on your plan as long as you are paying monthly for a device.

Verizon is the only one around here who charges $50 a month. Now here almost all contracts are $35, and $45 if you want unlimited data. MetroPCS was $20 for the phone, and $35 a month for unlimited talk text, 5gb data, and a wifi hotspot whatever that is. And if you buy that contract you get the Galaxy tab for another $20.

I'm not sure if it's a 2 year contract but my fiancee went with that. It's a monthly bill so I assume it's a contract. Her dad bought it so I'm not sure.

Verizon isn't $50, the cheapest plan you can get on Verizon postpaid for one person is $90-$100/mo. AT&T is in the same $75-$100 range, with T-Mobile being $80/mo if you want unlimited data. I don't know what you mean by "around here", as those are all nationwide carriers that charge the same no matter where you live in the U.S.

MetroPCS is a prepaid carrier, same with StraightTalk, Cricket, Tracfone, and T-Mobile prepaid. You may have a device contract, which is basically a loan on your phone that you may off each month. Personally I think it's stupid, taking a loan out to cover a $500 phone, but some people choose to do it that way. Now on postpaid, using their device payment plan gets you a discount on your monthly bill, so in that case it's worth while.

If he is including family plans, there might be one that has unlimited data for 2 or more people for around $50 per person.

Afaik MetroPCS does not do device contracts. I really have no idea what he's talking about.

Damnit guys, again?

My dad pays for my monthly bill, 40 bucks a month for unlimited talk, text, and 1gig of data. If I buy a phone, then tmobile will charge me an addtional 25ish bucks a month. I dont want to do that. I would rather pay the upfront cost.
