new to ram disk

I plan on having 64gb of ram and using 52 for ram disk and 12 for the OS. But I am a total noob to all of this. What will the ram disk affect? Will it improve GPU performance?

Why are you budgeting for 64 GB of RAM if you don't even know what it does? ;)

No improvement on GPU, just think of it like a really fast hard drive that you can install stuff on.

Because I have the budget for it now and I plan on learning what I can do with it.

So, what is the point of putting anything on a ramdisk when it will have to saved else where and re-loaded on each start up. In a previous post, I've been told that games should be on a HDD 7,200 rpm and only the OS and apps should be on a SSD. Will installing a game on the ramdisk do anything other than increase the install time? Eventually that time will come back around when I have to save to a different drive.

That's not really a reason, but okay. I'm not judging you but it seems kind of shortsighted.

Here's the part where you tell me how it makes sense to your computing habits. There are a few use-cases like caching that benefit from a RAMdisk, but otherwise it's not very practical.

I don't think a 52GB 'disk' that is wiped every time you shut the computer down is terribly practical or a good use of money. As you've said you would need to have that data backed up elsewhere and put it back on the RAM disk each time you boot your machine up again. Just get 16GB RAM and be done with it. :cool:

I think in your other thread that you said you went ahead with the 64GB and Ramdisk. When everything is together and you've used it, please inform if Ramdisk continues to make sense in the days of SSD and 7200rpm HDDs. Back in the 5400rpm HDD days, it did come in handy.
