Canon Imageclass laser printer connection issue

Hey all, this is probably a long shot but I thought I'd ask the gurus here before throwing the printer out the window.

We have a Canon Imageclass MF4770n at work, an all in one laser printer fax yadda yadda. For some reason most times when we try to initiate a scan from the printer ('Scan -> PC' button) it just throws an error saying it can't connect to the computer. Meanwhile, we can still print from the computer just fine to the same printer. Without fail a computer restart fixes it, though as you can expect it's a pain in the ass to restart the computer most times you want to scan something. Re-plugging in the USB or power cycling the printer does not fix it to confuse things more.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer software, didn't fix it. This seems to have started after the upgrade to Windows 10. The computer is fully up to date, so "the big" Windows 10 has been installed and didn't rectify it.

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks in advance.

I would say firewall or network discovery issue. So look at your network settings.

If this started happening after the windows 10 upgrade, then I would try doing a fresh install of 10 to see if that fixes it. A lot of issues coming from updating to 10 instead of fresh installing.

What I would do is open your printer/scanner from 'hardware and devices' in 'control panel' and change the settings to tell the printer to ask what function you want to use then you can choose 'scan' from the drop down box, the machine is probably set to 'print' as default. You may have to do it differently depending on the printer software, my machine when I want to use it I open the 'my printer' icon on the start screen and a box comes up with the different functions to choose from, print, scan etc etc and I just click on which I want to use.

Is it possible to do the free upgrade with a fresh install? I would love to fresh install all my computers if this is the case. I even have both the iso's. I figured if they were just offering it for download I had to get it.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow

Yes you can do the free upgrade with a fresh install. If you created a Microsoft account on 10 and have signed in with it, then all you do is reinstall 10 sign into your Microsoft a count and it's activated. If you didn't use a Microsoft account then reinstall 10 using your existing windows 7 or 8.1 key.

Nice! Thanks for the info, very helpful. I'll have to dig out my Windows 7 keys looks like, I didn't sign into a Microsoft Account. Oh wait, one computer was Windows 8 that came with the PC. It never did have a cd key sticker, but I seem to remember some sort of program that brought up the cd key..
