Climbing the upgrade ladder.

Hey all.

My system is an i7 930 2.8ghz housed in an evga x58ftw3 motherboard with 12gb of ddr3 ( 6x 2gb ). And a gtx 970 4gb. I have windows 10 running off a pretty sweet Intel 600gb ssd.

I am experienced in overclocking my chip and have got it up to 4 ghz but only 3.8ghz stable.

The cpu iself is in fine order its just long in the tooth now compared to the rest of my system and I feel it's holding me back in games. I used to do a lot of video encoding also but no longer do. And I keep the i7 at stock now because those old chips simply run way too hot for my liking.

So to get down to the point of my thread. I dont have a lot of money and want to upgrade my cpu motherboard combo. I'm thinking an i5 2500k or a 3570k on a 1155 platform with a z77 chipset so I can overclock and expand later. Ive seen benchmarks showing these 2nd and 3rd gen i5s outperform my old chip in both single and multithreaded so thats good enough for me.

So you think IF I sell my old board and cpu on eBay I'll get enough money to buy a second hand board with one of these i5s? I could even sell 4gb of my ocz ram to help cover the cost. As I think 8gb would be enough now for the games I play. Battlefield. GTA v. Battlefront.

So do you think I could manage that on eBay and not pay much towards my new combo? Or at least very little if I sell some ram too?

Thanks

Edit also open to suggestions of other platforms from amd that would offer more performance than my current chip but be around the same trade value.

If you're grabbing used chips, don't bother with the 2500k or 3570k. Grab a X5680/X5690 or a W3680/W3690 and just plop it onto your existing mobo (make sure bios is up to date before swapping chips).

You'll get better performance out of that than a 2500k or 3570k.

But I am not looking to spend anything if possible. Plus I wont get sata 3 or usb 3 if I just throw one of these in and it might run a bit cooler I guess. Are those 32nm?
