Android smileys - getting rid of them

I'm running Android on my phone and I noticed that at times when I make smileys the phone will convert it to that Android version of a smiley. Even on Instagram it does this.

Is there a way I can get it to stop doing this and show me normal emoticons?

I'm having trouble finding this.

To be sure we're on the same page, you're mentioning suggestions, but I'm talking about the way the smileys are displayed. Android shows them as the android version of smileys, rather than standard yellow smileys. I'm trying to get it to show that normal version.
