Problems with drive (D:)

Hello everyone. This is my first thread, so I'm going to try to be as specific as possible. I got home, thinking about playing some games to end another day. I opened my laptop and went to eat something. When I got back, i got a message saying something like 'scanning and repairing driver D', in a way that the computer loads itself. I waited for about half an hour, then when I started my game, I got an error saying 'this app cannot run on this version of software; please download the latest version of it and try again'. It seems like none of my games work anymore, which is quite a shame. I checked the photo album, and this is where the situation got real. Each photo seems as corrupted. Later on I saw the capacty of the driver, if yesterday was of about 250gb, now is of just 20gb. I checked if it's possible to format it to its original form, and it seems like it's possible, but if there is a chance, I really would want my pics back. Is there any way to get them back ? The C driver seems alright, and the windows version is 10 with its latest update. Thanks everyone, have a nice day.

Since this is a laptop, is it 1 drive partitioned into 2 or do you have 2 separate drives?

Well your drive sizes don't add up. Drive c should be bigger then 185gb. I bet you have 1 drive partitioned into 2. Look a disk management, it will tell you.

Yeap, seems like you're right, there is only one drive. It seems like drive d is divided into two parts, a primary partition and a recovery one. Now what ? Is there a possibility I can still recover the data from the primary partition ?

Yeah, you have 1 drive with several partitions. However, drive D is the issue. According to the image, drive d should be 258.15gb and on top it only shows its 20.01gb. Not sure if this is a windows issue or what. I've never seen this before.

@beers Any ideas?

I'm trying to decipher this thread since I'm jumping in late. Your 250GB partition is only being picked up as 20GB?

I honestly would just think the drive itself is dying, particularly if it's corrupting your data alongside this issue of partitions not being seen correctly. Have you tested it with Seatools? Running chkdsk from command line might not be a bad idea either.

If you're not worried about using the Recovery partition ever (just will reinstall your OS to factory defaults), then you could try deleting the recovery partition on the far right and see if Extending the 250GB partition into that space rectifies the size to what it should be. I would only try that if you're comforable reinstalling Windows at some point, which likely will be needed anyway.

That sounds rather jacked up, it almost sounds like the boundary of your partition changed somehow and now you only have chunks of the data available.

You could try expanding the partition boundaries but I imagine most of your data is RIP.

A shop might be able to help but if the drive truly did that on its own I'd replace it asap for daily use.

Well, thanks for clearing it for me, at least I know what is to blame and why. Thanks for your time, and I wish you all a great day.
