Ok my setup is an R2000db Edifier speaker, hooked up via Fiber to my maximus viii hero alpha (built in soundcard) in a fairly large room, just looking for a little more bass to add to my setup, not looking to break the bank 100-250 $ price range can go over just a tad but try to avoid, I watch alot of movies and play alot of music (john wick "led spirals" is my current favorite) and alot of electro-house, hardstyle, and rock

Your speakers don't have a subwoofer out. There's only one way you can get around that limitation and that is to get an amp/receiver infront and have that do the signal splitting to the speakers and sub.

There is a 5.1 output on the mobo, but it could get finicky to try and get that to work with a pair of speakers that actually isn't using the onboard sound card and having the subwoofer somehow hooked up to it where most subs use the RCA output and not the 3.5mm (1/8") jack.

Fyi, using the optical out from the mobo basically bypasses the onboard soundcard and also means that it's using the DAC on the Edifier speakers to translate the digital signal.

So I would be best off getting an amp w crossover and hooking that up via 5.1 to get both to work together, and if I desired better sound quality eventually a dedicated sound card.

Any recommendations for an amp/crossover and a sub?

Ideally you would be looking at this: optical out -> dac -> amp -> speaker/sub.

No. Depends on what you want to achieve. Are you looking at getting to a 5.1 setup for movies or are you looking into getting two towers that's more on the audiophile end for listening to music. Pick the one that's more important to you.

If you can wait for massdrop to come out with another drop on the Kanto SUB8 subwoofer, they usually go for around $180 + shipping.

I'm looking more on the audiophile end, and thank you for explaining the ideal setup for my situation, now I know what too look for, gonna look into that sun as well as others and into some amps as well

I use a set of Alesis studio monitors that have a 3 inch speaker and a tweeter. They are powered with an Alesis RA-100 amp.

Needless to say, they were a little light on the low end, so I bought a cheap little EQ from Radio Shack and cranked up the lower frequencies.

I was able to get just enough boost in the bass response to make everything really thick and meaty.

I didn't need to add a sub at all. I just boosted my monitors with a little extra bass from an inexpensive external EQ.
