So a month in on 9.0 (patch June 1) on the Galaxy (One UI 1.1) and battery life has improved substantially; standby or idle time seeing the greatest improvement by far. The Samsung 'Device Care' app recognized 7 apps that were draining the battery with background usage (Chrome, Drive, Google, and Play Store being the worst offenders). After the apps were put to sleep, battery life increased substantially. I can go two days without charging the phone if I haven't used it heavily.
My work phone, the Kyocera DuraForce Pro 2, got the 9.0 update (June 1 patch) around the same time as my Galaxy, and battery life has also improved substantially, again with idle time seeing the greatest benefit. I think I've hit 3 days of idle time on that phone without charging.
