I have found very fewer that thought Google messenger was anything but a downgrade and possibly spyware. Are there other good secure alternatives from play store that function pretty similar to the Samsung app?

Google Messages is better than anything else at the moment. I finally switched to it so I could take advantage of RCS messaging that Textra did not support.

It doesn't let me delete all but individual messages within a chat. Either delete entire chat or individual messages one at a time which could take a while.

Here's a comparison video. The only feature off Google messages I would want is less video and image compression in text messages.
Google messages has less customization, I can't easily delete all message but the last in a chat, I can't seem to keep it from turning on my camera when trying to attach an image which doesn't require the camera, and the appearance of the app sucks.
I can select any part of text message and delete it. Just tap and hold the particular one and you'll see trash icon appear at the top with other options.
Not sure why you would want to delete messages anyway.

In a given text I get a long conversation of message boxes. If I delete all messages at once I might also remove a message that comes in while I'm doing it, or in general have no reference to what was last said. Samsung messages lets me select all messages and deselect the last few so I can delete the older stuff. I can only delete one at a time on Google messages and that could take a long time.
Also I'm finding when I search from my contacts for someone to text it includes contacts I've long deleted. They aren't part of my phone apps contact list anymore. I'd like to only use my phone contacts list and delete all others.
Sounds like it is syncing your Google account contacts.

My contacts should only be in phone app. How do I delete contacts everywhere else?
I have 3 ways in saving contacts. Phone, Google and my Samsung account. If you select your contacts to phone then that's where they will stay. But if you accidentally select Google account then it will be on phone and synced to your Google account which means Google messages will pull your contacts from that. I would check to see what contacts appear in your Google account.

How do I find contacts in Google account? It's not like an app of its own?

Also apparently I'm showing up on other people's phones with two different names under my number when texting them now.
Can you send us a screenshot of what they see? The only way that can happen is if your number is listed as different contacts on their phone. You can have 2 contacts with different names with the same number. This won't happen just because you are using a different messaging app.

My friends showed me his contacts. I'm only in there once. He says this has been going on for years though so has nothing to do with messenger.
