slow computer

I have a descent copmuter, P4 1.8GHz, 128 MB of RAM, Windows XP.......But when I log on to my username it takes a long time for the desktop to load up. My friend's computer is no better (mabey even worse) than mine but his desktop pops up right away when he clicks his username. I also have 3 usernames, could that be the cause of the lack of speed?

I would bet that you're using a "standard" loadset that include all the bells and whistles? If you are, there is a huge amount of background processes loaded at startup. Norton included, if you're comfortable with regedit I can suggest some startup processes to get rid of.

go to
Start -
Run
Type in : msconfig
if you run Kazaa or a keyboard manager or even anything that u dont REGULARLY use, turn it off under the 'startup tab' this will considerable reduce the length of time it can have on start up (with the 128 ram it can have a great stress on the computer)

Really, upgrade your RAM. WinXP runs OK on 128MB, but when you consider that some mobile phones have 512MB ...

You can play around with some settings:
1. Set your visual effects to: Adjust for best performance.
2. Set your virtual memory minimum value is 1.5x and maximum value to 3.0x to the total memory you plugged into the system.
3. Create another page file drive, use about 2% of total HDD space as the new drive.

Adding more memory does help a lot.
Hope this help.

yeah the 128Mb would do it, it dosn't really cost that much to even get 1 gig - dramatatic improvement. but yeah just changing some settings and deleting old stuff will definatly help. its impossible to tell by how much but it will definatly help.

1. Upgrade RAM as much as your budget allows
2. Run C Cleaner (google "c cleaner", freeware download, install and run, make sure to fix registry errors too!)
3. Make sure your virtual memory is 2x your Total RAM
4. Defragment
5. Disable all startup programs you don't desperatly need
6. If still not happy with performance, upgrade your processor to the best one you can find for your socket (probably Socet 478, P4 Extreme 3.4ghz, most likely will have to be used)
7. If still not happy, you're due for a new computer

He is right, except I am not too sure about number 3.

RAM is your problem. I have 2 gigs in my system for XP. And in the computer that I am writing this on, it is XP with 512 mb, and it still is too slow for me.

with how old it is...1gig will probably cost about 100 bucks...id say thats probably pc100 or pc 133 stuff there, if hes really unlucky it might even be rambus...which is really expensive...scrapped a few systems that had rambus in em :/
