Linux modems?

I'm making a computer and I want both Windows XP (or Longhorn, if it comes out in time) and SuSe Linux 9.1 Pro, but I read somewhere (or hear it) that not all internet modems are compatible with Linux. I was wondering:-

1. What kind of modem Linux accepts?,

2. What is the difference of the Mindows compatible modem and the Linux compatible modem? and

3. Can I get a modem that is compatible with both Windows and Linux?

you'll have to get a hardware modem. i know i know, it sounds dumb, but a lot of the modems you can get are software modems. i don't know which specific ones work for both, but i know that if you get a winmodem, linux isnt gonna go for it

by the time longhorn comes out, hopefully dial-up will have completely phased out by then, so there will be no need to worry about winmodems not being compatible with linux.
