Running very slowly

My laptop that i use at home and at work has been running very slowly lately. It will freeze for 2-5secs on some very simple tasks, such as opening a word document, or a new internet tab in firefox.

Utilities wise im currently running Adaware, AVG, and CCleaner every week. The spec of the laptop is as follows:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor
1GB DDR RAM
Nvidia Geforce 440 Go 64MB
Windows XP SP2

Do you think there is a problem with the laptop in some way? Or is the spec just getting a little long in the tooth now? Shame really as when i purchased it just 2yrs ago the RRP was over £1500!!

well, make sure you've run the defragmenter built into windows, also, if you've had it 2 years and never done so, i'd suggest re-installing windows, xp has an issue with code degradation and needs a fresh install every once in a while. try these one step at a time and if the problem isn't fixed in the end, then it's probably got a hardware issue, those specs should run xp just fine. might even just want to get some more memory.

I'll give the defrager a go this evening, i think this will help alot as i am forever downloading things to the laptop, then putting them on my external drive, alot of stuff is backwards and forwards alot.

I get it through work for £30 a month, but someone has offered to take it off my hands, so i might be finishing the contract at work and getting out a small loan to get myself another computer, i'll have £1000 ($2000) so i might just build myself a pretty impressive desktop.

By the way, your spec seems rather impressive, what do you use your set-up for with that little lot?
