I have narrowed it down to two CPU's. Need some advice on which one would be better for me.
-I don't play any games
-I mostly use my PC for internet and making movies, music and that sort of thing.
Which one would be better:
1. Q6600
2. E8400

it really doesnt matter. none of those things are resource demanding. if that's all you're going to be doing, then you can probably get a cheaper CPU to save some money

Well if you want to really edit Pictures or Movies (music as well perhaps) you should get the Q6600 over the E8400. Most editing programs (I said most) do take advantage of the extra cores.

I have used a Q6600 for video encoding and my E6750 does the same encoding just as fast.So I know a E8400 would be just as good as a Q6600.I can encode multiple videos while I'm gaming with my E6750.And everything runs great.

Do you guys know if I'm going to just be able to put the new chip in? Will the PC read it OK, or is there more I have to do?

should be able to just put it in, what motherboard do you have? if the motherboard says it supports quad core than you should be good, and some that dont say they support it still do. you may have to update your bios for those situations though.
