Defrag, run a program like CCleaner to rid yourself of unwanted files, cookies, history etc. If you have visited dubious sites then post a Hijackthis log as you may have an infection with something running in the background.

But if you want "original" speed then a reformat is the only way for it to be like "new" again. As time goes on and we add more programs etc our machines will slow down in the process.

uninstall resource-using apps and search an alternative e.g. uninstall nero, install magiciso

Post a list of Programs

Post a list of programs and then we can tell you what ones to uninstall:

Well post a list of your programs. This how you do it:

  • Download Hijackthis from here
  • Open Hijackthis
  • Click on "Open Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Open Unistall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List"
  • Save it in a location
  • Notepad will open
  • Hit Ctrl + A
  • Copy + paste in a forum reply

Here are the CCleaner Instructions:

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

As a last resort you could wipe it. But i wouldent recomend doing that. like most other people said just delete all temporary files and make some space on your hardrive. :D

This worked on my mom's 5 year old laptop - I restored it to its original speed.
Make sure you don't misspell anything while doing this:

Windows XP:
1) Click on Start and go to Programs/All Programs, Accessories and click on Command Prompt
2) In the command prompt, type in:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
3) Press the Enter key
4) Do not close the command prompt while you are carrying out the rest of the steps
5)Type in:
start devmgmt.msc
6) Press the Enter key
7) In the Device Manager, click on "View" and click on "Show Hidden Devices"
8) Expand the USB category (called "Universal Serial Bus controllers"...something like that)
9) Uninstall all the devices with icons that are faded out
10) Make sure you don't uninstall anything important
11) Close the device manager and the command prompt and reboot.

Windows Vista:
1) Click on Start and go to Programs/All Programs, Accessories and right-click on Command Prompt. Click "Run as Administrator".

Make a system restore point if you are afraid of damaging your computer. You might also want to uninstall some of the mouse or keyboard drivers if you have not used the actual mice/keyboards for a while.

if it came w/ a recovery disk, I would back up your data and do the recovery. That is, setting your computer back to its out of box state.

CCleaner is great, but you could also look at glary utilities. It has the same features as CCleaner, plus quite a bit of extra stuff.

Change your virtual memory settings. Increase the amount of memory your computer uses like RAM, and it should speed it up at least a little.
