Does your Vista computer not have a CD/DVD burner? I'm curious as to why your using your XP machine to burn stuff?

If you use your laptop as a portable device like most people do you should consider just replacing the interal hard drive with a larger one. Caring around an external hard drive everywhere you go can get pretty combursome.

Id' really be looking at hardware issues with the system. I'd start by replacing the IDE cable. Give the drive a try in another PC as well as you may have an issue with the IDE controller on the motherboard itself.

Differnt versions of Direct X have differnt hardware requirements. There are certain things a Direct X 10 card can do that Direct X 9 (and lower) cards can't do.

You would notice a differnce with a 500mhz CPU your almost doubling your speed. It won't be super dramatic or allow you to run all kinds of new software by any means but you should notice the PC will be more peppy and respond better overall with the software it has.

I have comcast cable and you can purchase additional IP's and cable modems at a cost. But yes the best course for you would be to run a cable down to the basement and hook it up to a switch and you hook all your devices to that.

Your using older hardware that may not be able to "see" the full capacity of the hard drive. Check your BIOS.
