    Gaming upgrade: Ram or SSD

You would need to upgrade your PSU to use that. Recommends a 550w PSU.

    Sandy Bridge design flaw

Not so sure about that. NewEgg no longer has SB CPU's, 1155 socket MoBo's. Not even listing Huron River Notebooks anymore. It's like they don't exist. If people have unopened MoBo's and can return no penalty do so. If not I say open and use. Enjoy it until the replacements come. You have two...

    Gaming upgrade: Ram or SSD

I don't think either will have much affect on game play. Upgrade GPU would improve gameplay.

Need to know what I should replace now and what can wait a bit

GPU is the smart upgrade and will help. The system still has potential, a quad is a quad. Look into OC'ing if you want to have some fun. I don't know your MoBo or CPU potential.

What's the most limiting factor to resolution?

The resolution on LCD, DLP and Plasma is not as adjustable as on say a CRT. They have fixed pixel displays. The number is what is called "native resolution" Yours is 1366x768. You could display at lower in your case of course you would not want to. It will generally lower the quality because...

    Solid State Harddrive upgrade

That review is of little use as OP is going to get a tiny drive and have OS. The review assumes all installed on SSD. So your little attempt is no better than the speculation. But thanks for the thought.;)

How much ping is too much?

Multi player I think you are a little slow. I think 60ms or better where you want to be. So 100ms not so bad but 200ms not good.

    Hp 3D laptop

As all HP does I am under whelmed. 5850, 720QM. I have 5870 and 720QM and mine is a year old. I also have concern about overheating. HP is famous for that. Yes the price point is good. Asus G73 3D is around $2000. It does have 460m and 740QM and looks much cooler.

have screens on startup, but goes black when gets to desktop

I suspect you have a hardware screen issue. From bad cords to inverter. I think very correctable if you can identify. Does moving/adjusting the angle placement allow the screen to display?

have screens on startup, but goes black when gets to desktop

I want to throw the HDD out of the mix. I cannot think how that has anything to do with your issue at this time. Maybe later. Does the external work? If so something wrong with your screen. If it cuts in and out your GPU/MoBo. If Both fail it could be HDD but not seeing it right now. You...

    Solid State Harddrive upgrade

Sorry to say that if all you install on the SSD is you OS all that might happen is a boost in start up. You also need to install everything that loads on start up to get the full start up benefit. I actually wonder if you would be better installing applications on the SSD and keep OS on HDD...
