External HD falls asleep at the wheel

Basically, the OS is sending a suspend signal to the USB device when it thinks it has been inactive long enough, and the drive is deciding to spin down to conserve power.

    Data Recovery /HDD/

I just sent you a PM, but for the sake of others reading this I'll mention it here as well. Usually, when you do a recovery and the files are all unable to open, it's because the software isn't properly recognizing the starting sector of the partition it's reading from. With certain...

    Need some hard drive help/recommendations

One thing to watch out for here, is that that is a 7mm drive. Some are 9mm thick and likely won't fit inside your laptop if that was the original thickness drive. As to a replacement, I'd say just go with any Toshiba or HGST brand drive that is 7mm or thinner as listed in the specs. Hard...

HDD not working or showing, help!

The DM006 series is very new, so I can't really speak as to their failure rates yet. Haven't seen too many come in for recovery, but a few years time will tell. Seagate drives have been real junk as of late. I know there are guys on here who will argue me on that, but it's been statistically...

HDD not working or showing, help!

Seagate 2Tb...hmmm..... let me guess... model is ST2000DM001? If so, I wouldn't be surprised if the drive is already dead. Major failure rates with those.

does too much images on hard disk , and contentious editing those images cause problem for Hard disk

That's good, but you're one of the lucky ones. Working in data recovery full time, I can definitely attest that Seagate drives fail at a higher frequency than other drives. WD isn't too far behind them regarding the number we see, but certainly less than we see for Seagate failures. Toshiba...

does too much images on hard disk , and contentious editing those images cause problem for Hard disk

When hard drives are constantly failing, two things I'd generally look to. #1. Power issues such as cheap computer power supplies, or ungrounded outlets/dirty line side power. Running your computer off a UPS alone will cut drive failures down to about 1/3 of the normal rate. #2. Cheap hard...

    Failed Smart Short Shelf Test

SMART can be a tricky and unreliable thing. Sometimes, a temporary glitch can trigger a SMART failure when the drive is actually fine. Many of the SMART attributes are actually just counting down things like power on hours, and power on cycles, which may not even have any real correlation with...

    what hard drive to buy

WD is OK, but I wouldn't say they are great when it comes to reliability. They are certainly better than Seagate which is utter crap these days. But, if you want something that'll really hold up, get HGST or Toshiba.

    RAM issue

I guess that depends on whether your hand is on the mouse or on the keyboard. I'm so used to doing it, it only takes me two fingers to press it.

    RAM issue

To get to task manager in any recent version of Windows all you have to do is press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

    Memory matching

Mix matching RAM has a pretty high chance of problems. The last few times I tried it, the motherboard outright refused to work with it. Other times I've tried it, it'd seem to work, but have relentless BSODs at random times. Just spend the extra couple bucks and get a properly matched set of RAM.

Sell my ddr4 ram for slower ram good idea?

Mix matching RAM is generally a bad idea and can lead to a lot of crashes. Especially if your motherboard is running it in multichannel mode. The speed difference in the RAM from DDI 4 2133 to 2400 may not make a huge difference. But, you should check to be sure your motherboard actually...

trying to clone my hdd to my ssd.

If you're willing to drop $20, this program makes it stupid easy to migrate a HDD to a smaller SSD: https://www.paragon-software.com/home/migrate-OS-to-SSD/ It even gives the option to exclude select folders to make room. Plus it avoids the aggravation of finding out afterward that you're not...

Problem copying large video files to an external hard drive

Seagate quality is in the absolute dumps right now. Their new drives are failing faster than we can keep up with recovering the data from them here. Get yourself a good HGST drive next time.

Can't open hard drive all of a sudden

Really, I wasn't aware of any companies out there in Wichita. But, I guess I haven't been there in a while. Last time I was out that way was when I was going to Goddard Middle school 20 years ago. I suppose "local" is a good reason to choose a company any day.

Can't open hard drive all of a sudden

Out of curiosity, where do you usually direct people too? I'm always curious about what company computer techs are recommending and why they favor one company over others. I've been amazed how many people like DriveSavers for the free shipping both ways (despite the fact they charge 3x what...

Can't open hard drive all of a sudden

The drive has S.M.A.R.T. errors related to uncorrectable sectors. Even if the original issue was caused by a bad power supply (unlikely) it's not going to fix the drive now if you replace it. The drive is toast and needs to be recovered/replaced. I don't direct anyone to a professional...

Can't open hard drive all of a sudden

From what you describe, I'd say it's 99.9% chance that nearly all data will be recovered. Obviously, there is the likely possibility that at least some files will be corrupted by bad sectors. I'm not surprised you had a bad experience getting data recovery at a "computer shop". Most are just...
