Can't open hard drive all of a sudden

I think it's a matter that you need to weigh carefully yourself. DIY carries risk. For example, the drive could die halfway through cloning and you'll only have part of your data cloned. Or worse yet, you could mess up and clone data the wrong direction and really make recovery impossible...

Can't open hard drive all of a sudden

The fact that you are still able to read SMART is actually a good sign as far as professional recovery is concerned. If the data has value to you (worth $400-600) then it's worthwhile to send out for professional recovery. It may not be that expensive at this point and has a very good chance...

    Hard Drive problems

There is no such thing as "repairing" a drive with S.M.A.R.T. errors related to pending/uncorrectable sectors. The media is degrading and it'll only get worse over time until it fails. Anything that "repairs" it is actually just masking the problem so it doesn't nag you until it gets even worse.

    To partition or not?

My comment wasn't specifically directed at you. It was more of a general statement about needing to constantly re-install windows.

    To partition or not?

If you have a good backup system in place, you can still do this without needing to partition. I guess that would be a personal preference. I don't personally install enough junk software or browse enough porn sites to need to regularly re-install Windows, but perhaps some have this need...

    To partition or not?

No, it was only a 20-25% difference in sequential read speed from the outermost tracks to the innermost and zero difference in seek time / random IO. I never even subscribed to that idea back when it made some little bit of sense. More often I've seen issues come up from the OS partition...

    To partition or not?

You do realize that the original reason why a lot of people would create a separate OS partition was just to ensure that OS and program files get stored on the outer tracks of the HDD which read marginally faster than the inner tracks. With an SSD all parts will read the same speed, so there's...

    Refurbished SSD's

I'm generally all for buying refurbished. Data storage media is just one place where I draw the line. Especially if it's from ebay as the OP indicated. It's very rare for media like HDDs and SSDs to fail due to a simple failure of an electronic component. Usually, their failures are due to...

    Refurbished SSD's

Off Brand = definitely no Refurbished, maybe. My issue with refurbished SSDs, especially if they are on ebay, is that it could be one that's been used & abused, stress tested to the limit, even have formerly had SMART errors. And it may well be that all they did to "refurbish" it was to clear...

    A disk read error occurred...

Oh, I thought you were getting disk read errors on the HDD not the SSD.

    A disk read error occurred...

Could be, or it could be that it found a patch of bad sectors that had previously never been noticed by they system. Bad sectors can sit latent for years with no ill effects until the computer actually tries to use that space one day. I'd still check the SMART.

    A disk read error occurred...

A disk read error could be just a fluke, or it could be a failing drive. I'd start by checking the S.M.A.R.T. of the disk using CrystalDisk Info or another program. If you've got pending/re-allocated sectors developing, then it's time to toss and replace the HDD.

SSD wiped instead of secure erase

Something is blocking write access to the drive. Most likely some third party software which is mistakenly trying to protect the drive. You don't happen to have any software running that's used to allow access to Mac formatted disks such as MacDrive do you? Perhaps you should try initializing...

    Hard Drive Problems

Just FYI ST1000DM003 is a very problematic model of HDD. Not as bad a the 3TB ST3000DM001 was, but we still see a ton of them coming in for recovery with firmware issues and read/write head failures.

    RAID enclosure: What is it?

I'm with Laquer Head here, a NAS is definitely the way to go. As to the RAID enclosures you ask about, it all depends on what you're looking at. Some require a RAID controller card inside the computer to manage the drives, others handle it internally and then provide a connection via USB or...

Hard Drive on the way out?

Well, most WD Blue drives are prone the the "slow responding" bug. However, it generally only develops after they start developing bad sectors. I'd start by checking the S.M.A.R.T. readout on the drive and see if it shows any re-allocated or pending sectors.

Hard Drive on the way out?

I said "jump to 100% all the time" not stay at 100%. Usually, it's intermittent, but I've seen plenty of systems where everything was operating just fine and it'd jump to 100% stay there for 30 seconds or so and then drop back down. Then do it again in a few minutes. It's usually just from...

Hard Drive on the way out?

I think you may be just misinterpreting what that number means. It does not mean the drive is running at 100% of it's speed. It's just a measure of the percent of time the drive is active to some level. In Windows 8 and 10, it's totally normal to see that number jump to 100% all the time...

USB 3.0 still faster even in 2.0 port?

The OP was talking about CF cards, they most definitely use NAND not NOR flash. Only the first few CF cards built in the early 90's used NOR, but that's back when they were only a few KB to a few MB in size. Long before the mainstream had heard of them.
