Repair And Retrival Of Data Of An External Hard Drive

We can take a look at it if you'd like, and for now we are staying open during the COVID mess. How does the drive sound when it spins up? Does it stay spinning or does it spin back down after a minute? Just want to be able to give you a ballpark price before you send it, in case it's more...

New computers have loud click from HDD

It could be the drives failing, or possibly that the power supply just isn't providing enough power to the drives. What brand are the drives?

My 10tb HDD's wont work with computer...is there a limit in tb?

A lot of external docks and USB adapters don't work with drives larger than 2Tb. But, if it supports 3Tb+ it'll almost certainly support up to 10-12Tb (although the advertising might not say so). Try getting a dock specifically listed for 4Tb+ drives.

Western Digital black or seagate barracuda hybrid drive?

It largely depends on the specific NAND memory and controller used. If you get something like a Samsung 850 PRO it'll be using Toshiba NANDs and probably will long outlast its meaningful life. EVO is good, probably is using Samsung's own NAND but not quite as good as the PRO. Then you get to...

Western Digital black or seagate barracuda hybrid drive?

No matter how good the controller is, it still doesn't magically save your data should even one NAND die.

Western Digital black or seagate barracuda hybrid drive?

Exactly this. And that's why my original comment was to not trust any critical data that isn't well backed up on such an SSD. I'm not saying it isn't a good price consumer SSD and you might get one that works out well. But, you might also end up needing to make a warranty claim and losing...

Western Digital black or seagate barracuda hybrid drive?

Just don't trust a no-name brand SSD like that with any critical data that isn't well backed up. Most brands like that are using downgraded NAND that was deemed unacceptable by a name brand and they use it anyway. There's probably 2-3Tb worth of NAND in there and they just used the pages of...

Western Digital black or seagate barracuda hybrid drive?

WD all the way. Seagate SSHDs keep showing up with heads stuck to the platters needing data recovery. WD ones don't seem to be having any common failure issues. Or, if you really want to spluge, get the Toshiba one and have double the flash memory. A hybrid drive certainly won't be as fast...

    PCB Replacment

To adapt a PCB and make it compatible for your drive, you'd need to move over the 8-pin ROM chip from the original PCB to the donor one. Beyond that all you need to match is the PCB number printed into the actual green part of the board. For Seagate it's generally a nine digit number starting...

How to trim a drive to minimum?

It's $20, but I've used this program enough times to pay for itself over and over: https://www.paragon-software.com/landing-pages/migrate-OS-to-SSD It'll properly migrate all data, allow excluding folders you don't want to copy, and get it all bootable and ready. It does all the partition...

How to erase data on an external hard drive

A free program that can zero fill a HDD for you is Active@ Killdisk. There is a paid version which includes the multi-pass wiping, but it's free for just zero fill. And we all know that a zero fill is all you really need. Everything beyond that is just a waste of electricity.

    Network Drive with USB 3

I think you're misunderstanding what the USB ports on a NAS do. Those are to connect an external HDD to the NAS for backing up files from the NAS onto the external drive. You generally can't connect a computer to the USB ports of a NAS at all. To do so would be like plugging two computers...

Seagate 2TB HDD 2.5": Is it worth saving $20?

WD does make a 2Tb in 7mm thickness: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822234339 Not exactly my favorite series of hard drive (because WD encrypted the ROM code and firmware on them making it near impossible to work on) but far more reliable than the Seagate versions.

Seagate 2TB HDD 2.5": Is it worth saving $20?

Actually, I misread the first model number before, it's not in the same family with the ST3000DM001 that's in a class action suit, they are both the new Rosewood family that's failing like crazy now (probably will be their next class action lawsuit).

Seagate 2TB HDD 2.5": Is it worth saving $20?

Depends on your laptop, but if it was a 7mm before, then probably not. It might be best to stick with a 1Tb for now. Or, just be sure you've got a good backup strategy in place and be prepared to have it go bad on you.

Seagate 2TB HDD 2.5": Is it worth saving $20?

I'd spend an extra $20 and get anything not Seagate. The ST2000LM000 drive is the same family series as the ST3000DM001 drives that failed in such high numbers they're in a class action lawsuit now. The 2Tb versions just had 2 less read/write heads, so they failed 1/3 less often (only 4 heads...

Is my HDD Dying or in Danger? (Pic) (Help)

If it only clicked for a few seconds, but the drive is showing up in BIOS, then you may still get a fair price for it. Just post on eBay an actual picture of the label and be sure to list in the drive specs (part #, DCM, model (including after the dash)) into the listing title. I've paid some...

Flash drive shows "write protected" after file transfer

Let me guess....you bought this thumb drive for a really good price on ebay right? Ebay has more spoofed capacity thumb drives for sale than legitimate ones. There's a million sellers out there who are buying cheap-o 4 or 8Gb thumb drives and spoofing the capacity to huge sizes like 128Gb or...

Need Advice comparison for Shockproof/Water-resist External Hard Disk Drive

There's no such thing as a shockproof HDD, PERIOD!!! No matter how much rubber or metal you put around it doesn't change the fact that the heads are gliding on a cusion of air only a few microns above the platter surface. One drop at the right angle will still destroy the heads and scratch the...

    External drive not reading

Many smart TVs use a sort of Linux operating system under the hood. Most likely your TV formatted the drive to something like Ext 4 which Windows won't recognize. Try installing Paragon EXT for Windows on the computer (the free version will work, just slowly) and see if you can access the...
