i've done a dualboot on my laptop and Windows XP runs a lot smoother. you never know, you might actually find that you prefer windows XP coz you might get better framerates in windows XP when playing video games. so yeah, i'd say go ahead and try dualbooting.

why don't you get a netbook if it's just for internet browsing and word processing. in the UK, the prices for netbooks are almost the same price as the low end PCs. and a netbook is more mobile than a laptop.

i would go for the first one and not bother to upgrade the graphics card for a while, but mainly coz i've got a much crapper PC atm and i live in the UK where the price of graphics card seem to be much higher.
