I had an error similar to that a few months back. Oddly enough, my nvidia drivers were out of date and once I updated those the update ran without an issue. I can't seem to find anyone else that had the same solution, so it might be random that it worked for me.

I most of your user files should be in /Users/<username>
Libre office is a fork of Open Office. Seems like they are doing a bit more development on the project over Open Office. Might want to give Libre Office a go or WPS OFfice http://www.wps.com/wps-office-personal
The menu that you are in should be the right location to saving in MS formats...
Does our version of Xenforo have a show/hide option for signatures? I see a few posts on the idea on other forums, but didn't see a clear answer on if it was integrated already, needed a pre packaged add on, or needed to be developed separately.

What version of Outlook are you using?
Easiest way to get to it in Outlook 2010/2013 is to open a new email hit insert -> signatures -> signatures. Edit the signature and save.
From that same menu you should be able to set the defaults for new message and reply.
I would second Voyager's opinion. Latitude over HP. It is a business class laptop. Specs are lower, but the build quality is much higher. We have these at work. A fiar bit slower compared to the never systems, but still running well for their age.
I would stay away from Windows scaling like the plague. Seems to work fine in some applications and completely breaks the UI in others. I work on a u2713hm all day and I find that text lower than size 10 is a bit hard to read after a few minutes. You might have better eyesight than I do, so...
